Speech by His Highness the Aga Khan at

Discours en franēais

Mr. Richard Descoings, Director of Sciences Po
Directors and Faculty of the MPA Programme
Graduating Students and their Families
Ladies and Gentlemen

It is a great honour to be with you today.

I had the opportunity to speak just a year and a month ago at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. I shared with that audience a definition I once heard of a good graduation speaker - they say it is someone who can talk in someone else’s sleep.

I hope that we can break that pattern today.

toward that end, i thought it might be helpful if i took up a question which may well be on many of your minds:

just who is the aga khan, anyway? and why is he here?

  • in response, let me say first that

  • i was born into a muslim family,

  • linked by heredity to prophet muhammad

  •  (may peace be upon him and his family).

  • it was exactly fifty years ago

  •  that i became the 49th imam

  • of the shia imami ismaili muslims.

the ethics of islam bridge the realms of faith on the one hand and practical life on the other - what we call din and dunya.

 accordingly, my spiritual responsibilities for interpreting the faith are accompanied by a strong engagement in issues relating to the quality of life and well being. this latter commitment extends not only to the ismaili community but also to those with whom they share their lives - locally, nationally and internationally.

SECOND, THE FAITH OF ISLAM, IN THE VAST MAJORITY OF ITS INTERPRETATIONS, IS NOT IN CONFLICT WITH THE OTHER GREAT ABRAHAMIC TRADITIONS.

THE SPIRIT OF PLURALISM IS NOT A PALLID RELIGIOUS COMPROMISE.

IT IS A SACRED RELIGIOUS IMPERATIVE.

IN THIS LIGHT, OUR DIFFERENCES CAN BECOME SOURCES OF ENRICHMENT,

SO THAT WE SEE “THE OTHER” AS AN OPPORTUNITY AND A BLESSING - WHETHER “THE OTHER” LIVES ACROSS THE STREET - OR ACROSS THE WORLD.

Remarks by His Highness the Aga Khan at the "Spirit and Life" Exhibition, London, UK

12 July 2007

As you know, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in particular, and the Aga Khan Development Network, in general, are working toward this goal in a wide variety of ways. I am especially pleased to take this occasion to thank AN IMPORTANT PARTNER in our efforts, THE PRINCE OF WALES - along with 18 organisations which make up THE PRINCE’S CHARITIES, for their special cooperation and support.

I am also very pleased that YOU ARE TODAY IN A BUILDING OF WHICH WE ARE VERY PROUD, OUR ISMAILI CENTRE. We hope that this exhibition WILL HELP BRING MANY MORE LONDONERS INTO THIS PLACE, THE CENTRE OF SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR OUR COMMUNITY IN BRITAIN.

If I could express one hope for all of you, as you leave this place today, it is that you will appreciate even more deeply HOW MUCH CULTURE MATTERS IN MUSLIM SOCIETIES, AND HOW DEEPLY CULTURE IS ENTWINED FOR MUSLIMS WITH MATTERS OF FAITH. THIS IS WHY WE CALL THIS EXHIBITION: 'SPIRIT AND LIFE'

At a time when the forces of exclusion, alienation, and separation can often seem so threatening in our world, I AM CONVINCED THAT OUR ABILITY TO HONOR AUTHENTIC SYMBOLS OF PRIDE AND IDENTITY - AND TO SHARE THEIR BEAUTY AND THEIR POWER WITH ONE ANOTHER - CAN BE A TREMENDOUS FORCE FOR GOOD. I hope you will feel the same way - let me thank you, most sincerely, once again, FOR SHARING WITH US IN THIS IMPORTANT MOMENT.

Thank you.

The Prince of Wales

A speech by HRH The Prince of Wales at the opening of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s the ‘Spirit & Life’ Exhibition at the Ismaili Centre

12th July 2007

Your Highness, Ladies and Gentlemen. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it is for my wife and I to join you this afternoon in celebrating THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS HIGHNESS THE AGA KHAN’S SUCCESSION TO THE IMAMAT.

It is, if I may say so, London’s great good fortune that His Highness has chosen to open HIS GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS WITH THE ‘SPIRIT AND LIFE’ EXHIBITION which my wife and I have just seen – we had to drag ourselves away from it! I understand that this is the first time these masterpieces of Islamic art have been seen in London. They are of quite exceptional historical importance and beauty.

But, perhaps still more importantly, they also convey the clearest possible message about the close ties between the Abrahamic Faiths. For example, the magnificent Eleventh Century Canon of Medicine, which originated in Iran, was equally indispensable to Western scholars for the better part of five hundred years.

And it was fascinating when I was recently at the British Library to see there in fact another fascinating exhibition called ‘Sacred’, which another very dramatic demonstration of the close way in which these faiths have been so close for so long.

So much attention is paid to the outward differences between Faiths. Almost reflexively, this becomes translated into seemingly impenetrable divisions between people; people who – if they did but know it – are in fact linked by much and separated by rather little. How refreshing it is, then, to be reminded by this marvellous exhibition of the spirituality from which our Faiths draw their real strength, and of the heritage and traditions which we share.

Death and succession
Aga_Khan_III

At the time of his death on July 11, 1957, his family members were in Geneva. A solicitor brought the will of the Aga Khan III from London to Geneva and read it before the family:

"Ever since the time of my ancestor Ali, the first Imam, that is to say over a period of thirteen hundred years, it has always been the tradition of our family that each Imam  chooses his successor at his absolute and unfettered discretion from amongst any of his descendants, whether they be sons or remote male issue and in these circumstances and in view of the fundamentally altered conditions in the world in very recent years due to the great changes which have taken place including the discoveries of atomic science, I am convinced that it is in the best interest of the Shia Muslim Ismailia Community that I should be succeeded by a young man who has been brought up and developed during recent years and in the midst of the new age and who brings a new outlook on life to his office as Imam.

For these reasons, I appoint my grandson Karim, the son of my own son, Aly Salomone Khan to succeed to the title of Aga Khan and to the Imam and Pir of all Shia Ismailian followers."

About the Ismaili Imamat

Introduction

excerpts

the last in the line of the Abrahamic family of revealed traditions, Islam emerged in the early decades of the seventh century.  ...

The Shia or "party" of Ali, already in existence during the lifetime of the Prophet, maintained that while the revelation ceased at the Prophet's death, the need for spiritual and moral guidance of the community, through an ongoing interpretation of the Islamic message, continued.....

The Shia, therefore, attest that after the Prophet, the authority for the guidance of the community was vested in Ali. The Sunni, on the other hand, revere Ali as the last of the four rightly-guided caliphs, the first three being Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman. Just as it was the prerogative of the Prophet to designate his successor, so it is the absolute prerogative of each Imam of the time to designate his successor from among his male progeny. Hence, according to Shia doctrine, the Imamat continues by heredity in the Prophet's progeny through Ali and Fatima.  ....

The Ismailis gave their allegiance to Imam Jafar as-Sadiq's eldest son Ismail, from whom they derive their name. Throughout their history, the Ismailis have been led by a living, hereditary Imam. They trace the line of Imamat in hereditary succession from Ismail to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, who is their present, 49th Imam in direct lineal descent from Prophet Muhammad through Ali and Fatima.

re: 'thy son, thine only son'

(Genesis 11:30 KJV)

  1. But Sarai was barren;

  2.   she had no child.

(Genesis 11:31 KJV)  And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

(Genesis 16:1 KJV)

  1. Now Sarai Abram's wife

    bare him no children:

intriguing  question

given the above SCRIPTURAL facts ONLY:

  • HOW AND WHEN was the FIRST ever promise,

  • made to abraham, FULFILLED?

    • (Genesis 15:4 KJV) And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir;

    • but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. [19]

  • WHEN was abraham's ONLY SON BORN?
    •  WHO was abraham's ONLY SON;

  •  for nearly a decade and a half or, MORE?
    •  what was his NAME?

let the old testament speak for itself.

the book of Joshua & the holy QUR'AN

an unbiased, open-minded, honest and intelligent perusal of the book of Joshua would show any seeker after the truth, that the said scripture had already resolved an age-old - or rather, an abrahamic mystery as well, vindicated ishmael, the gospel of barnabas, the holy QUR'AN and islam long before the final dispensation of islam in the 7th century AD.

and millenniums later, the holy QUR'AN corroborated the above in that same order.

2. for he [jesus] is an Ishmaelite

multiplied HIS SEED
[ by ISHMAEL]

(Genesis 16:1 DRB)  Now Sarai, the    W_I_F_E[1] of Abram, had brought forth no children: but having a handmaid, an Egyptian, named Agar,

(Genesis 16:2 DRB)

  1. She [sarah] said to her husband [abraham]:

  2. Behold, the LORD,H3068  יהוה  yehôvâh

  3.   hath restrained me from bearing

  4. go in unto my handmaid [hagar]

  5. it may be I may have children of her [hagar] at least.

  6. And when he agreed to her request,

(Genesis 16:3 DRB)

  1. She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid,

  2. ten years after they first; [16 + 3 = 19 x 1]

the mystery concept of 2--two

[1]  &   [2]

(Genesis 16:3 DRB)

  • dwelt in the land of Chanaan[1],

  • and gave her ;

  • to her husband ;

  • to   W_I_F_E [2].

  • [16 + 3 = 19 x 1]

FACT #1

although hagar was sarah's handmaid, ONLY SHE MARRIED hagar to abram - and thereby gave her the official status of a WIFE at the time.

EVEN the lord god recognized hagar's seed as the seed of abraham.

COMPARE

FACT #2

(Genesis 24:67)  And Isaac brought

her into his mother Sarah's tent,

  1. and took Rebekah,

  2. and she became his wife;

  3. and he loved her:

  4. and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

please note that:

  • isaac took rebekah first ;

  • AND THEN she became his wife.

according to the 'holy' bible, the sequence of these and similar events was also practiced by his seed for several generations after him.

whereas, hagar was given to abram as a WIFE FIRST and then he took her and she conceived.

 (Genesis 16:3 KJV) And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. [19]

(Genesis 16:4 KJV) And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.  [5 x 4]

thus, abram/hagar's seed viz., ishmael was of a purer and legitimate  bloodline.

(Joshua 24:3 DRB)

  • and brought him into the land of Chanaan[2]

fulfillment

(Genesis 15:2 KJV) And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

(Genesis 15:3 KJV) And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

(Genesis 15:4 KJV) And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.  [19]

And I took your father Abraham from the borders of Mesopotamia:

and brought him into the land of Chanaan

islam & the holy QUR'AN

  • the sacrificed was described as forbearing and steadfast in the Qur'ān and if we search the whole Qur'ān we will find the name of Ishmael(P) associated to patience and steadfastness and not Isaac(P)!

  • "And (remember) Ishmael, Idris, and Zulkifl, all (men) of constancy and patience".

C4096. This was in the fertile land of Syria and Palestine. The boy thus born was, according to Muslim tradition,
the first-bom son of Abraham, viz., Ismail. The name itself is from the root Samia, to hear, because Allah had heard Abraham's prayer (verse 100). Abraham's age when Ismail was born was 86 (Gen xvi. 16).
C4097. The boy's character was to be
Halim, "forbearing". This title is also applied to Abraham (in ix. 114 and xi. 75). It refers to the patient way in which both father and son cheerfully offered to suffer any self-sacrifice in order to obey the Command of Allah. See next verse.

although separated by millenniums at least, one scripture still collaborates and corroborates the other.

The Sacrifice Of Abraham: Isaac or Ishmael?

The Oxford Companion To The Bible echoes the same position as the Encyclopaedia Judaica.

In Muslim tradition, the Arabs trace their ancestry back to Abraham through Ishmael. Because Ishmael was circumcised (Gen. 17:25), so are most Muslims. And, analogous to Paul's reversal of the figures of Isaac and Ishmael (Gal. 4:24-26), Muslim tradition makes Ishmael rather than Isaac the son Abraham was commanded to sacrifice.[6]

multiplied HIS SEED
[ by ISHMAEL]

AND I multiplied his seedmultiplicavique semen eius

(Genesis 12:2 KJV) And I will make of thee [abram] a great nation[1], and I will bless thee[1], and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

(Genesis 17:6 KJV) And I will make thee exceeding fruitful[1], and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

(Genesis 17:7 KJV) And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

compare

(Genesis 17:20 KJV)

  • And as for ISHAMEL

  • I have heard thee:

  • Behold, I have blessed him[2]

  • and will make him fruitful[2]

  • and will multiply him exceedingly

  • twelve princes shall he beget,

  • and I will make him a great nation[2].

according to the old testament, all those PROMISES and BLESSINGS were conferred upon ISHAMEL long before the physical birth of isaac.

  1. later, moses, joshua, isaiah, david and jesus, etc., made mention of the same ;

  2. each, in his own respective and distinct way;

  3. and also, laid firm and solid foundations thereof;

leading directly to the last and final dispensation of islam, as we have it.

collaboration and evidence

look at the scriptural facts only

'TAKE NOW'

the command was: 'TAKE NOW  thy son, thine only son Isaac';

(Genesis 22:1 KJV)   And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

'TAKE NOW'

(Genesis 22:2 KJV) And he said, 'TAKE NOW thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into The land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

(Genesis 22:4 KJV)  Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

question

1.     WHERE WERE BOTH ABRAHAM AND HIS ONLY SON ISAAC,  AT THIS SPECIFIC POINT IN TIME AND PLACE - 'TAKE NOW?

2.       WERE THEY EVEN TOGETHER, as we have been lead to believe?

3.       HOW DO WE KNOW THAT?

4.       the book of genesis is totally and absolutely silent on this issue.

5.       therefore, where did abraham and his only son Isaac start out originally;

6.       for their long journey  ['TAKE NOW];

7.       in order to proceed to ONE OF the mounts in the land of moriah?

8.       that said, both abraham & isaac journeyed for more than 3 days from someplace  ['TAKE NOW] ;

9.      to get there in order to fulfill the lord god's command.

no matter how you look at it in the old testament only, this matter remains totally UNRESOLVED up to this point in time.

so, abraham could not have been commanded to sacrifice his only son, isaac unto the lord god.

on the contrary, the scales tilt in the other direction altogether.

BEERSHEBA

  1. went together to Beersheba

  2.  and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

  • 'thy son, thine only son'

  • who was he?

  • what was his NAME?

(Genesis 21:14 KJV)
And Abraham rose up early in the morning,[1]

and took bread, and a bottle of water,
and gave it unto Hagar,
PUTTING IT ON HER SHOULDER,
AND THE
CHILD,
and sent her away:
and she departed,
and wandered in the wilderness of BEERSHEBA.
[7 x 3 & 7 x 2]

THE LAD - ishmael

(Genesis 21:17 KJV)
And God heard THE VOICE OF THE LAD;
and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven,
and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar?
fear not; for God hath heard THE VOICE OF THE LAD where he is.

(Genesis 21:12 KJV) And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of THE LAD, and because of thy bondwoman

(Genesis 21:18 KJV) Arise, lift up THE LAD, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.

(Genesis 21:19 KJV) And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave THE LAD drink.  [7 x 3] & [19

(Genesis 21:20 KJV) And God was with THE LAD; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

THY SON, THINE ONLY SON:

ishamel

(Genesis 21:14 KJV)

And Abraham rose up early in the morning[1], ....

  1. and took bread, and a bottle of water,

  2. and gave it unto Hagar

  3. putting it on her shoulder,

  4. and the child [ishmael],

  5. and sent her away:

  6. and she departed,

  7. and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba[7 x 3 & 7 x 2]

question

where was ishmael AFTER THIS TIME?

compare

isaac

(Genesis 22:3 KJV) And Abraham rose up early in the morning[2]

  • and saddled his ass,

  • and took two of his young men with him,

  • and Isaac his son,

  • and clave the wood for the burnt offering,

  • and rose up,

  • and went unto the place of which God had told him.

(Genesis 22:16 KJV) And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld THY SON, THINE ONLY SON:

(Genesis 22:17 KJV) That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

(Genesis 22:18 KJV) And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
