An In-Patient Birthday
Hi Everyone,
Sure enough, at midnight last night, not two minutes into Travis' birthday,
as Joe and I returned from a RARE night out (my parents arrived Monday),
we noticed that Travis was warm. Yes, both fever and high blood pressure
again. And chills. That's what did him in -- the doctor wanted us to bring
him in to start antibiotics right away.
So, I can think of WORSE places to be on a birthday. Joe and I decorated
Travis' hospital in the dark, early hours so he could awaken to bright colors
and festive surroundings. The room looks GREAT! It helped Travis begin the
day in pretty high spirits, considering his location. As the morning wore
on, we realized this isn't such a bad thing -- nurses, patients and doctors
have all been all coming by to with Travis a happy birthday. Travis' hospital
teacher just adores him. She came by with practically a suitcase full of
gifts (Thank you Ms. Char!) and decorations. On her heels was the hospital
Child Life Specialist, with a bag of things for Travis and Spencer, too!
So... we certainly can't complain.
Travis is feeling good. Tired and some belly ache, but otherwise no complaints.
If they can get this blasted fever down, hopefully he will be out in again
tomorrow. They think it may in fact be more GVHD flare up, but since it
keeps happening, perhaps next time we can just treat at the RMH and watch
his vital signs, instead of rushing into the hospital each time. We'll see.
Travis was ablostulely delighted yesterday, as we walked out of the RMH
to go somewhere, and he was surprised to see a larger than life clown sign
proclaiming his 6th birthday. Travis said "Mom, if I have been even
a little more excited, I would have jumped out of my pants!" He said
over and over again "That sign made me SO happy, Mom" (Thank you,
Saint Nora!!). It brought tears to my eyes to see him so happy.
So here we are -- cakes ready to be cut, presents ready to be opened...
my parents here with us in the room. What are we waiting for? "We're
in the middle of Nintendo 64, Mom!" (My Dad brought an insider's clue
book to the ins and outs of Nintendo 64. The world stops now until the boys
find all the secrets!).
Thank you all for sending your wishes to Travis. Joe and I agreed last
night that no matter where we are, this is one birthday we are celebrating
deep in our hearts. We are truly blessed to be here together to see this
day.
Love,
Melanie, Joe, Travis and Spencer |
