Introduction

Should the United States purchase Alaska?  It is the year 1868 and you and your group of intrepid adventurers have been appointed by President Andrew Johnson to mount an expedition to the wild and untamed Alaskan wilderness.  Your mission:  to determine the feasibility of purchasing Alaska for the United States of America.  How much is Alaska worth?  What natural resources does it have?  What other advantages does it hold for the United States?  What negative factors must be considered before buying this vast wilderness?  You and your group of explorers must complete the dangerous, exhausting expedition, gather important information about the natural resources, geography, history, and culture of the native peoples in Alaska, and make a recommendation to Congress, in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and a written report, to purchase or not purchase Alaska.  If you choose to accept this hazardous assignment, which you already have, your expedition to Alaska will be financed by a special commission of the executive office.  Your mission is critically important, and time is of the essence, so start working!
