The expedition couldn't have taken place without the generosity of our sponsors:
Hillmorton Locks Canal Shop
Dunchurch Management Centre
Hotel in Oxford
The plan was to collect the kayaks at 10:00 at the top end of the Neptune Staircase in Fort William, the kayaks were being delivered by Highland canoes. However due to a misunderstanding Highland Canoes delivered the kayaks to the bottom of the locks and this wasnt sorted out until 11:00 so we were already an hour late by this point. Our next challenge for the day was to try and pack our kit into our sea kayaks which none of us had ever done before. This took a surprisingly long time due to a number of factors. Firstly as I said none of us had ever tried anything like this before. Secondly we seemed to be carrying an awful lot of kit when you think that we were only going for four days. Also the entrance holes through which the kit had to be put were smaller than the dry bags wed already packed, this meant we had to unpack the dry bags, put the dry bags inside the boat and then repack them, apparently this is the proper way to do it and it was definitely easier than the method wed initially tried. Anyway we eventually managed to pack all of our kit into our kayaks but by the time we were on the water it was midday. The first section of our journey was on the canal and this is reasonably boring due to the lack of scenery and how it always looks the same. The canal section was most of our first days paddling which although a bit depressing at the start for us proved to have been well worth it later on in the trip! We continued as wed planned for this day although obviously running behind schedule having had such a wait at the beginning until we finally reached Gairlochy where there is a road bridge with the B8004 across it. There are also some locks at Gairlochy and these must be portaged which is difficult as the boats when fully loaded with kit are an absolute nightmare to carry. The picture below shows a couple of us carrying a kayak.

After having portaged the locks we set out onto Loch Lochy with some trepidation as we'd never before paddled on water so vast. We set out with a warning from the lock keeper that the ferry would be coming shortly from Inverness and as it travels at 18 knots it is best to keep well out of its way. We set off and the change in scenery was immediate and the loch could be seen to be beautiful.

Loch Lochy
We knew that we were camping on the right hand side of the loch and ideally we would like to go up that side however that we might not be able to because of wind, fortunately there was very little wind so we were able to go up this side. There was a lighthouse at the beginning of Loch Lochy but sadly we didn't manage to see it. We have got a warning for you that you should watch out for low flying bats, this one got confused and crash landed in the loch fortunately our supervisor was on hand to rescue it.

Paddling along the edge also proved of great interest to us as we saw a number of buildings most of which were boathouses a lot of which were derelict. We also saw the below building and we presume it was a boathouse but there's an interesting room above it, if you have any ideas as to what it is then email us!

As I have mentioned we were warned about the Ferry coming from Inverness and this proved very wise as the wake of the ferry were waves of a couple of feet and having expected them they caused no problems however they might have otherwise done so. We were kindly allowed to camp in the grounds of the Letterfinlay Lodge Hotel although there is a nearby campsite. We had a very good night here although we found the midges were worse than we'd expected, even though everyone had told us how awful they were. Whatever anyone ever says about the midges always imagine them to be ten times worse and then you'll be getting somewhere near to what they're actually like! A picture of the hotel can be seen below.
