Amnesty International |
Amnesty International was founded in 1961, when British lawyer, Peter Benenson, launched an appeal for amnesty with his publication of an article focusing on prisoners of conscience. In July of the same year representatives from Belgium, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United States established "a permanent international movement in defence of freedom of opinion and religion". Since its remarkable start Amnesty International has won both the Nobel Peace Prize in October of 1977, and also the UN Human Rights prize in 1978, as recognition for the organizations work in human rights preservation. During 2001 Amnesty International represented 2,813 named victims of human right violations, 408 of which were classified under the Urgent Action Network, and 117 of the urgent actions resulted in good news. Amnesty International has made it their primary goal to dedicate the organization to the research and necessary exploits in the prevention and end to human rights violations (physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination). A.I. envisions a world where every person enjoys all of the human rights as detailed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. I would like to be a spokesperson for Amnesty International because as a Canadian citizen, I live in a country that advocates for human rights, and I have the privilege of a life free from that terror. So many communities face the grim reality of threat of persecution and torture for exercising their basic human rights. It's an overwhelming thought that these types of violations occur worldwide, but Amnesty International provides a united front to combat those that breach the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I believe that as a spokesperson for this organization I would have the opportunity to be an instrumental contributor to the endorsement of its cause, in efforts to generate support. I associate with this organization because I am confident that our compassion will make the world a better place to live. As there is power in numbers I want to be a spokesperson for Amnesty International to rally voices to speak up against the torture and violence. There are so many ways in which the public can become involved and show their support for the charity, which are very simple to co-ordinate. As a spokesperson for Amnesty International I would publicly endorse local Amnesty projects, create short-term activities or events in support of campaigns being pursued by the Urgent Action Network. Amnesty International has regional offices throughout Canada, which hold fundraisers and publicity events to generate membership interest, and to obtain financial support, these offices could also benefit from my support, as added publicity for events of this nature. The main objective that I would wish to achieve as a spokesperson for the charity is public awareness. Simply writing a letter, fax, or email, making a phone call, or signing a petition or postcard can demonstrate support, and all that's needed is a little organization and guidance. This would be my most advantageous contribution to the charity. As someone who has participated in campaigns and the defence of human rights I have experienced a variety of methods and sources for information on current issues. Amnesty International is an organization that has improved the lives of millions of people. Regardless of how you contribute, all of its members walk away with the satisfaction that they have played a part in assuring that every human being has the right to live without fear. I have chosen to support Amnesty International for this reason and urge all people to do the same. |

The Hospital for Sick Children |
The Hospital for Sick Children was established in 1875 by a group of Toronto women lead by Elizabeth McMaster. Since it's humble start in an 11-room house, with six iron cots, the hospital has grown to not only meet the basic health needs of children in Toronto, but on a yearly average treats children from over 40 countries, including other parts of Ontario and Canada. The hospital has benefited the community, not only from the treatment of children, but virtually every nation of the world has profited from patient care innovations, preventative medicine practices and strategies, research discoveries, and partnerships formed with other leading health care specialists and institutions. There is an ancient proverb that reads, "We have not inherited the earth from our ancestors, we have only borrowed it from our children". I would like to be a spokesperson for The Hospital for Sick Children because I believe that there is no greater tragedy then that of an ailing child, and I believe that as a community it is our responsibility to ensure that our children are capable of moving forward to take ownership for that which they have worked for. Currently, it is the hospitals goal to improve the health of children by influencing public policy. Among the issues being campaigned is the support of the Speak Out for Kids program. Although the charity receives a great deal of publicity through its promotions department I believe that advocating for the organization would be advantageous because of the implementation of the aforementioned program. This program focuses on community involvement with the government to ensure future financial support, and to stress the importance of the hospital to its community. This program is easily accessible to all citizens and support can be demonstrated through a variety of methods, however Speak Out for Kids is still relatively new and needs exposure to gain the much needed backing. As previously mentioned, I would like to advocate for the Speak Out for Kids program, which has been established to give the public a venue to act as a voice for children with our government. Sick Kids developed the program to be user friendly, seeing that all supporters receive ongoing information and training from the hospital. As campaigns arise the hospital petitions for support by indicating what contribution would be most advantageous in support of the cause. Writing letters, making phone call, or simply sharing your experiences are examples of the type of involvement that they ask from the public. As an advocate for the charity I would work to spread information when campaigns come up, and I would act as a bridge of communication between the charity and the public.

When I was first introduced to the Hospital for Sick Children I felt guilty for not contributing to the charity. I witnessed the charity's work in the community and I recognized its accomplishments on an international level, and therefore had no other choice, but to become involved. As the years have passed I have realized that more can still be done, and I now feel guilty for not doing more for Sick Kids. I feel as though this is my opportunity to make a difference on behalf of the outfit, and as such would consider it my honour to be the spokesperson for the Hospital for Sick Children. |
