THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN
Through my involvement with the Unionville High School Concert Choir I was introduced the annual Sick Kid's Telethon. Our choir was responsible for the performance of the original song performed each year as the opening of the telethon. We also contributed as entertainment for the production with a choice of a medley from a Broadway show. Throughout the years we performed numbers from such shows as The Secret Garden, Les Miserable, Rent and Ragtime!. In my last year of the choir I was selected as a featured soloist in the Ragtime! medley, performing the role of Mother in the number New Music. As a result of the aforementioned introduction to the charity I decided to contribute through a more concrete approach. I have been a member of the charity since February of this year. Through my monthly donations the charity has one more supporter helping it provide and have access to the most technologically advanced medical science, allowing it to aid the lives of millions of children. |

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
| When I was in grade six at Holland Landing Public School my teacher, Joe Crone, asked for us all to write a poem. We were exposed to the fact that millions of miles away there was a group of prisoners being held and tortured for crimes of conscience. Mr. Crone was privy to information regarding campaigns being pursued by Amnesty International and wanted to see us all give our support in their efforts to have the prisoners freed. Our poems were sent along with thousands of letters from children across Canada to the government in a plea to be proactive in the battle for human rights. I can not remember the book report that I completed for English, or what we learned in Math that term, but I remember that poem. Since this early foundation I have chosen to become proactive in the crusade for a universal standard of human rights and the declaration that these are to be complied with. I became a member of Amnesty International in February 2003, and have since participated in several campaigns. The primary obstacle that faces A.I. is financial assistance, as the organization remains impartial from any government organization, religious creed, or any cultural community. The charity depends solely on the fiscal support contributed by its members and their continued support in ongoing campaigns. It is my intention to endow this organization with future support and to enlighten the population on the achievements of this distinguished society, in continuation of the fight for universal human rights. |

CHILDREN'S WISH FOUNDATION
The Children's Wish Foundation, which exists to grant the desires of terminally ill children, is my mother's favourite charity. As a child I became aware of the work of this organization through her fundraising efforts. As a performing a participated in numerous events where the proceeds were dedicated to this charitable organization, and through my direct contribution observed the elation that is experienced when you grant a dying child's wish. This charity is still favourable in my household because of the role that it plays in making children's last years easier to cope with. The only thing more tragic then the death of a child, is the life of a dying child, and I believe that it is our duty to make that life as enjoyable as possible. |
