Our girls spent the first couple of weeks at Lucille Packard Hospital (Stanford).

They started with a few days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  There, they spent some time in and out of incubators, sometimes under under special theraputic lights.

Note the cool tanning shades.

Elle actually came out of this thing with a tan - which has stayed with her.  Malia's fair skin remained.
Later, they were moved to an intermediate care unit, where they (and we) received great care.  Sometimes the girls were bundled together in one bassinet.  And sometimes they were wrapped up in a blanket with the theraputic lights.

Elle learned to feed very quickly, but Malia took a little longer, which is why she still had the tube in her nose.  To the left, Kate burps Malia after a feed.

Below, is a series of Elle.  As you can see, she was very expressive from the get-go.

Elle came home after one week.  But first, she had to pass her first test - to sit in the car seat for one hour, without stop- ping her breathing.  Observe her look of keen concentration!
We went back to the hospital daily to see Malia, and Elle came with us.  Colin holds Elle here - still a very small girl.
When we were there, the nurses loved playing with the girls, and were happy to watch them while we broke for lunch.

Once on our return, we found they had wrapped them up in their hats and blankets (knitted by hospital volunteers for NICU babies), all bundled together for this nice photo:

On March 13, after 2 weeks and 2 days, Malia was able to come home.  It was a great joy to finally have the family together.
Kate and the girls, all wrap- ped up and ready to go home.
