| Our girls were about 5 weeks premature, so they started off in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), hooked up to a number of sensors and tubes. To the left is Elle, who was looking around, curious and responsive, from the very beginning. |

| Colin, (left, with Malia) watched over them during the day while Kate recovered. In the evening Kate finally was able to come up and hold them both. At right, they are in her arms. The picture is copied and flipped so you can see them both (Malia/Elle, then Elle/Malia). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We stayed in the NICU late on their birthday. Left, our sweet Malia, sleeping. Right, our intrepid Elle - big yawn, little girl. |
