Malia & Elle to 1Year

The girls have reached their first birthday!
It's amazing to reflect on all that has happened.  Our thoughts turn to a very eventful months 9-12, as well as to the past whole year - easily the longest
and shortest year of our lives!.

The winter was long, cold, and wet, but the children were well bundled.  These pictures of Elle (Left) and Malia (Right), taken in mid-December (10 months)  are among our favorites.
There was a lot of goofing around before Christmas.  Elle (Right) continued to be more mobile, crawling around and getting into everything.  Malia (Left) was less mobile but more vocal.  Both were very happy doing their own thing.
For Christmas, the girls got a wagon.  We loved pulling them in their wagon to the park at the end of the street, where the girls would ride the swings and go down the slide.  Meanwhile, their intrepid dog would turn high speed laps around the knoll that surrounded the adjacent tennis court.

About this time Kate noticed a growth on her leg.  It looked like this:
Of course I'm talking about Elle here, demonstrating the effective attention-getting "clinging" technique, which  typically followed the only slightly less effective attention-getting "whining."

The other thing that the girls really liked was their scooter and "rock-a-puppy."  After awhile, Elle could even push Malia on the scooter.

Not long after that last picture, Malia had some fairly major surgery to repair her cleft palate.  We didn't take many pictures because we were busy worrying about our girl, and frankly weren't really enthusiastic about photographing Malia with her tongue stitched to her cheek or arm restraints that kept her from putting her hand in her mouth.  Malia, however, was much tougher than us, and after a couple of hard days in the hospital, she came home and healed up quickly, and better than new.

On February 26, a big event occurred: the girls turned one year old, and had their first big birthday bash!  We threw them a luau, with tons of Hawaiian food, ice cream cake, and top-notch hula dancers.  We invited over hundreds of people, who brought hundreds of babies, who caused great joyous mayhem in our front playroom.  Well, truthfully it was like three dozen friends, with about a dozen babies, but the mayhem was there..

All the kids loved the hula.  Elle even did her own dancing!

It's taken me awhile getting this last page up.  As of now (early June), Elle can stand on her own, Malia is crawling around everywhere and can stand holding on to something, and both of them are picking up words.  They love to go out whenever they can, often to the park or to eat with mom and dad.  Quite a joy, these two, and although we are tired it all seems like it is all happening so fast!  We have a lot more pictures of course, and I'll try to post them every 6 months or so and link to this site.  Hope you have enjoyed - we sure have!
