Swan Family Genealogy
Origin of the name "Swan"
Swann/Swan : English Nickname for a person noted for purity of excellence (attributes of the swan, supposedly), from Old English swan . Some Swan surnames derived from the signs at the roadside inns during early times, when people didn't read signs as much as they looked at the pictures and innkeepers sometimes took their sign's picture as a surname. (Most were animals, birds or fish.) Occasionally, Swan is derived as an Occupational name for the servant or retainer as a variant of Swain . Cognates include Schwan (German), De Swaen (Flemish), De Swaan , Van den Swaan, Van den Zwaan (Dutch), Svane (Norwegian), and Svahn, Swahn (Swedish). from

Notes on John Swan
John Swan, son of John Swan, sr., settled in this township in 1856; was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, in 1820.  He married in 1842 to Mary Ann Aten, born in 1828, and died in 1877.  Five of their children are now living - George, John C., William, Jane, and Silas Darwin. He commenced life with but the clothes on his back, and they unpaid for; but by industry has made himself possessor of a farm of eighty acres, and has been enabled to start some of his children in life.  He is a respected citizen of the township.

Notes for William Louis Swan
"The church was again debt free in 1929 when Reverend W.D.Swann was pastor...Brother Swann was known as a great gardener and it is said that he introduced the cold-pack method of canning to Rowlesburg.  He was also known as a "money-getter."  He often stationed himself at the bank on pay day to get a percentage of the paychecks cashed in the interest of the church.  He served the church at Rowlesburg until the fall of 1932; he retired from the ministry in 1943 and died April 9, 1945" (History of Methodism in Rowlesburg,  by Rev. Jennings H Fast, 1949. page 22)
Euphia Swan says that after William got everyone used to tithing, the church never again was in debt.
