"Older residents of the town remember Edward E. Houdlette, trader, and prominent official. His son, Henry C., born 1845, went to sea as a common sailor at sixteen years of age, wandering as far from home as the Black Sea. In course of time he went to the Pacific, where for fifteen years he was captain of the steamship Australia, owned by J. D. Spreckles and Brother, sons of Claus Spreckles, the sugar importer, which steamer sailed between San Francisco and Honolulu. While in the Australia, the family of King Kalakaua, of Hawaii, took passage with him for San Francisco. In return for his kindly attention shown the Queen and her party, the King knighted him, conferring the title Sir, from which he is known as Sir Henry Houdlette. In 1900, Captain Houdlette took command of the 6000-ton steamship Sierra..." History of Dresden Maine, Charles Edwin Allen, pg 733-34 link to Immigrant ships with info on Henry C. (click here) |
