| "The descendants of Louis Houdlette, son of the French lace weaver, Charles Estienne Houdelette, have been numerous, and from Dresden they have become widely scattered. Many of them have filled prominent positions in various walks of life, and they are honorable. In Dresden they are still numerous. Sketches of many individuals and families would no doubt possess interest and value, but data are lacking, and if they were not, so much of the history of the family would hardly be practicable in a work such as this. A genealogy would be bulky." (HOD, pg 733). Thus under these words by Charles Allen I try to present a bit of Houdlette history and genealogy. These pages deal with Charles Estienne Houdlette, a Huguenot, who settled in Dresden, Maine. Charles & his descendants are underlined, my goal would be to have this page include all his descendants carrying the Houdlette name and descent thru the female lines one generation. The basic framework of these pages is Edith Houdlette's 1909 book on the descendants of Charles, The Houdlette Family 1707-1909. The book lists only those carrying the Houdlette name and their spouses, no places nor dates. Said book is reprinted in Rundlette Palmer's A History of Dresden Maine, which includes transcriptions of Dresden cemeteries from where many of the death dates come. Much of the early family information is from Charles Allen's The History of Dresden Maine. Other sources are from family contributions and online resources. I am sure that there are many missing names, particularly in the most recent generations. I still have more information, mostly notes and references from books to add here and will get to it as I have time. If you can help, or notice any errors or omissions, please contact me. Myself, I am but a shoestring relation to most of the people listed here. I am a descendant of Charles thru his daughter Lucy. While looking for information on the internet concerning this family, I could find little and it seemed their were others out there with similar problems, thus these pages came into being when I realized I seemed to have more information than most out there. I hope this helps anyone looking for this family. Together we can save a bit of the history of this interesting Huguenot family. Jef |

"Charles Estienne Houdelette, Huguenot, was the founder of the Houdelette family in America...He was born in France in 1707, and during the persecution of Huguenots that followed the hollow Peace of 1748 fled with his family to Germany, thence by way of Rotterdam to Boston, landing there in 1751. He settled in what is now Dresden Maine, where he died in 1784." THF The Houdlette Family 1707-1909, Edith Houdlette, 1 Mar 1909 "Charles Estienne Houdelette is said to have been born in France in 1707. He was a lace manufacturer or weaver, and left a web in the loom when he left France. He went to Germany, but it is not known when, and sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on the ship Priscilla, John Brown, master, in 1751. Jacob Bailey says he was a Calvinist. Tradition says that his only son Louis was born in France....Houdelette appears to have been a man of considerable education. Probably he was quite well off in France, though in somewhat straitened circumstances here as is shown by a mortgage of his land to secure the amount of his passage money... Fred A. Houdelette, of Boston, says that the baptismal register has disappeared, but it is thought that Houdelette came from southern France and went to Mannheim, Germany." A few years ago I found that our ancestor Charles Houdelette came over on the same ship as several German families who settled in the Waldoboro (Broad Bay) area. I joined the Old Broad Bay Family History Association and received copies of the Bund und Blatt their newsletter. I corresponded with Will Whitaker who published the articles with input from Gary T. Horlacher who traveled to several parishes in Germany searching out roots of those families. As a result they did a special publication titled "The French Element in the Emigration of 1751. In that they identified two families that came to Broad Bay in 1751, who were French, but citizens of Germany (Neu Isenburg) prior to emigrating to America: Oudelette-Haudelette Family. This is a common Huguenot family. Charles Etienne Oudelette removed from Pont-a vers in Picardie, France to Neu Isenburg with his parents, where he became a citizen. He was b 2 Jan 1707/08 to David Oudelette and Maria Anne Fouquet. He md 1) Maria Maelaine Galloy (b 4 Jan 1707 d/o Pierre Galloy). They had six children in Neu Isenburg: 1. Anne Marie Oudelette b 2 Feb 1734. Godparents David Oudlette, grandfather and Anne Le-clere, wife of Pierre Galloy, grandmother. 2. Jean Charles Oudelette b 26 Dec 1734. Godparents Jean, son of Pierre Galloy, mother's brother and Susanne Charlotte, daughter of deceased David Oudelette. 3. Louise Wiullemine Oudelette b 21 Nov. 1736. Godmother Louise Willamine Laourebach, wife of Pierre Galloy, mother's brother. 4. Martha Oudelette b 16 Feb 1738 5. Marie Madelaine Oudelette b 8 Apr 1743 6. Sara Catherine Houdelet b 29 Jan 1743 Charles Etienne Houdelette md to 2) 1747 Susanne Macret ('Acqueques) in the town of Hanau. They may have remained in Hanau and had two more children there before emigrating to America. Cavalier Family. Louis Cavalier, son of Henry Cavalier of La Falguiere, St. Jean de Gabrial Parish in Cevennes in the province of Langdoc, France, was a merchant and brewer in Neu Isenburg. He md 9 Mar 1734 to Marie Jeanne Cottin in Mannheim, Baden. They had five children christened in Neu Isenburg prior to emigrating to New England in 1751: 1. Susanne Louise Cavalier b 6 Aug 1738. She d young 2. Catharina b 1 Sep 1741 3. Jean Louis b 12 Jul 1744 4. Jeanne Marie b 17 Nov 1748 5. Jean David b 30 Apr 1742 It is interesting that Neu Isenburg was under the same ruler as the town of Buddingen where the Meyer, Sellenheim, and other families were from and from which the Moravians were connected. Other leads from these records include a few references to a Lehr family and a possible lead the the Fought family. (Fouquet)" Here is an email from Irene Meckfessel from Jun 07 Here's some corrections for Charles Houdelette's American daughters. If there was a Jane born in 1750 in Germany, then she must have died in infancy. Obviously, Mary could not have been born 3 months after Jane. Since she was born in Boston, it must have been in 1751 (or early in 52?) when the family was living in Boston. Jane, born May 7, 1755, married James Brown. The following paragraph appears in History of Clinton, Maine, by Major General Carleton Edward Fisher. 1970, pg. 53: "James Brown, a native of Groton, Massachusetts, came here from Norridgewock, where he had been taxed in 1781. (The Illustrated History of Kennebec, Maine, indicates James was born in England and his wife Nancy Hoodlet in France.) The family entered in the Clinton records that James was born in Groton and his wife Jane in Pownalborough. The author of the item in the history may have meant that James's father was born in England. James, Jr., was born in 1786 and another son, Samuel, in 1783. If that be the case, the family came to town after 1781 and prior to June 1783. They lived on the west side of the Sebasticook River in the lower part of town and had the following children: 1. Samuel (b.1783); m. Abigail Bray 2. James, Jr. (b. 1786); m. Mary R. Hunter. they had 6 children: James D., William, Lithgow, Lottie, Alfred L.and Charles P. 3. Charles (b. 1790); m. Polly Hudson 4. Nancy; m.John Hunter of Topsham." These children listed were born in Clinton. Two daughters had been born in Norridgewock, Mary, b ca 1779, m. Jonathan Leavitt; and Hannah, b 23 Sep 1781, m. Abraham Stewart. I have seen the Illustrated History and I thought the quoted story was based upon a Brown family tradition of a shipboard romance, with a confusion of generations and genders. I have believed that the original story was based upon French Charles and his English second wife. Susanna seems to be a big mystery. If they were married in Germany, I wonder what she was doing there. McCrae would be a Scottish name rather than English. I wonder if she might have been a widow, named Margaret M. (de Susane) McCrae???? . |

Notes on Louis Cavalier, father-in-law of Louis Houdelette. Database: New England Immigrants, 1700-75 IMMIGRANTS TO NEW ENGLAND, 1700-1775. CAVALEAR, Louis, of Frankfort, Me.; from France in 1752; Child: Mary m. Louis Houdlette q.v.Maine Hist. Soc. Coll. 2nd Series, Vol. 3, p. 356; Huguenots in Dresden "Louis Cavalier is said, and probably with reason, to have been a native of Southern France, from which he went to Mannheim, Germany. The Cavaliers were linen weavers. Mr. Fred A. Houdlette, of Boston, has an old parchment document, dated 24th March 1732, which was a license granted by the city of Mannheim to two Cavalier brothers. There is a probablity that these brothers were the sons of Jean or John Cavalier, the famous Camisard Leader, who died in London in 1760. The parchment mentioned descended from Mr. Houdlette's ancestors to him. Mary Cavalear (as spelled in probate records), of Pownalbourgh, widow, was administratrrix on the estate of Louis Cavalear, deceased, June 10, 1761. The inventory on the estate gave property to the value of 48:9:1. John Louis Cavalear, "late of Pownalborourgh" was deceased in 1768, as Mary Cavalear, widow, of Boston, was administratrix on his estate October, 28 1769. The inventory was 100:13:4. My records concerning the Cavaliers are very meagre, and I do not know how more may be supplied. With the above quoted probate record, the name seems to have disappeared so far as Dresden is concerned." History of Dresden Maine, Charles Edwin Allen, pg152-3 |

Generation 2 Children of Charles & Susannah 5. Jane Houdelette; born 8 May 1750 in Germany (HOD) born 7 May 1755 in Hancocktown, Lincoln, Maine (LDS); married ? Brown. 6. Mary Houdelette; born 28 Aug 1755 in Boston (HOD) died 1834 (AHD); married on 25 Nov 1773 to George Meyer (HOD) or Mayers, born 1740; died 10 February 1803 (AHD) (son of Johann Ulrich Mayer and Mary ?, genealogy.com). (I've seen some refer to her as Molly, and his last name has several varient spellings) "Rev. Jacob Bailey's journal records Nov. 25th, 1773, 'married George Mayer and Molly Houdlette' ...About a year before her marriage she killed a bear which was breaking throughthe garden fence. She was born in Boston of French parents" (HOD p159) see Mayers Page for descendants and more 7. Dorothy Houdelette; born 10 Sep 1757; married in 1783 to Abram Page. (HOD); children: Huldah, Levi, Dorothy, John, Abraham & James. 8. Catherine Houdelette; born 10 Jun 1760; married on 1 or 5 Jan 1795 in Woolwich ME (LDS); died 12 Oct 1855 age 95 yr (AHD); to Aaron Bickford (HOD), died 25 Mar 1848 age 84 yr (AHD); children: Charles, Robert, Aaron, Henry & Jane. [Elizabeth Allen contributed that Ann C. is Ann Catherine born 6/10/1760, the youngest child of Charles and Susanne Margeret McCrae. She married Aaron Bickford 12/12/1794. He was the son of Henry Bickford and Abigail Tibbetts. This is documented by Eleanor Everson of Dresden, but so far this is the only place I have seen her called Ann. I think it is correct since all the other information fits, she is buried under the name Catherine (AHD)] On the same lot in Pine Grove Cemetery as Jasper & Emily Houdlette are buried Henry Bickford, d. 6 Aug 1816 age 91; Aaron and Catherine; and Henry Bickford d. 11 Aug 1827 age 27, who I think is the son listed below, but the birth year would be one year off the death year according to the age, so I leave this date here. This is from AHD p359. |

notes on the Bickford Family: "Early records and tradition relating to the Bickfords are fragmentary and incomplete. Here follow what I have been able to glean. It is believed that they originated in England, and came to Dover, N.H., thence to what is now Augusta, and to Wiscasset. Henry Bickford came to Dresden, dragging his baby son Aaron in a handsled. The weather was very cold, and tradition says that the baby was so still the parents feared he was freezing, and they gave him a vigorous spanking to warm him up and start his blood circulating. It is possible that this baby's name was Paul, as both names have been mentioned. Henry was a shoemaker, who lived in a log-house on the bank of the Eastern River. A 'bullseye' was over the door, which is now in the Jasper Houdlette house, where Aaron lived, it is said. Henry died in 1817, and his gravestone is in the cemetery" (HOD, pp 542-543) (note from Jef: because of the dates and ages, I think that Paul & Henry were most likely brothers, but this is just speculation, not fact) |
