Built in the 1970's to satisfy the rising demand for water
from the developing towns of Northampton, Peterborough, Corby, Milton
Keynes, Daventry and Wellingborough, the reservoir's storage capacity of
124,000 million litres (27,000 M galls) provides not only water for
domestic and industrial consumption but also a water expanse offering
tremendous recreation potential.
Water is pumped into the reservoir from the River Nene at
Wansford and the River Welland at Tinwell through 19.8Km, (12.3 miles) of
pipelines and tunnels.
The dam is constructed mainly from upper lias clay obtained
from the land which was subsequently flooded. The crest of the dam is
1,200 metres long and 40 metres above the lowest section of the base,
which is 870 metres in cross section. The reservoir's maximum depth is 34
metres (110 feet).
