We visited a beautiful village called Exton lying to the east of Burley-on-the-Hill. It is the home of the Earls of Gainsborough.
Uma_at_Fox_and_Hounds_Inn.JPG (58558 bytes) We had our lunch at 'The Fox & Hounds Inn' - a nice and homely inn located in this village. The vegetarian lunch prepared for us was so special and luscious.

(Fox hunting was a traditional sport in these areas. Hunters take a pack of hounds - dogs - to chase and round up foxes.)

The village is built around a green with thatched cottages.
Exton_church.jpg (55388 bytes) The 13th century church of St. Peter and St Paul stands in the parkland of the manor house.
It is said the church was severely damaged by a terrible storm in 1843 and was restored in 1850. The is an old graveyard in its compound. The oldest gravestone I saw was dated 1706.
12thcenturychurch_in_Exton.JPG (49803 bytes) Monument of Harringtons.
Marble statue of Harringtons found in the Exton church. John Harrington (left) was created Baron Harrington of Exton by James I in 1603.
