Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) will be in Washington, DC,
May 19-21, for a state visit. Bush and GMA will be discussing security and
economic development in the Philippines. There is a strong possibility that the
two heads of state will be negotiating the re-opening of US bases in the
Philippines.
On April 17, 450 US military personnel arrived in the former US naval base in
Subic Bay, Philippines, for a two-week exercise that began on April 25. In
addition, a total of about 1,200 US troops will take part in military exercises
at three points in Luzon (northern part of the country), including the former
US Clark air base. US military intervention in the Philippines has increased
military and political repression against legitimate people’s organizations and
legitimate revolutionary forces. Since the deployment of US troops to the
Philippines in February 2002, sex trafficking of Filipino women and children
has increased to 600%.
Initiated by GABRIELA Network - NY/NJ and by the
Network in Solidarity with the People of the Philippines, the Justice Not War
in the Philippines Campaign was formally launched on February 2003 in NYC. JNW
aims to specifically amplify the voices of resistance against US military
intervention and repression in the Philippines while working hand in hand with
other anti-war Filipino formations in the Philippines and in the US. It also
seeks to build bridges of solidarity among those who are struggling against US
military interventions around the world.
