Switzerland Hit and Miss

At last Jana broke her losing streak by winning a match in the first round of qualifying for the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich. She beat Swiss Wild Card, Tricerri Alienor 6-4 6-3.
Unfortunately she lost her Second Round match to Asa Carlsson of Sweden 2-6 2-6. This result shows that Jana is still not back on top form, since she should really have beaten Asa and qualified for the Main Draw of this Tier 1.

It has been a bad ten weeks for Jana since San Diego. Harsh first-round draws have led to early exits from tournaments. This meant that she got little match-practice and that has probably led to her loss of form. Her ranking has slipped from the mid-50s a few weeks ago, down to 71 today. The good news is that she has no more ranking points from last year to come off until 2002. So if she can get a few wins under her belt before the season ends, she should climb some way back up the rankings.

Shock Defeat 2

Jana's losing streak continues with a loss in qualifying at Filderstadt to Mikaelian of Switzerland. Mikaelian, losing finalist at the Basel tournament in July, is ranked low because she rarely plays. One day Jana will get an easy first round match.

This is Jana's 7th successive loss since losing a close match with Jelena Dokic in August.
She has points to defend so will fall in the rankings into the 60s!
From now on she has no more points to defend this year. So win something soon please Jana and get back up where you belong!

Shock Defeat

To the dismay of her fans, Jana lost her 1st Round qualifying match for the Kremlin Cup 4-6 1-6 today against 120th-ranked Sandra Kleinova. A very big upset of the wrong kind.
Unless she was ill, there's really no way Jana should be losing this sort of match. She should have qualified easily against this field.
If anything good comes from this loss, hopefully it will be to make Jana refocus on her consistency, and her need to develop her self-belief in her own talent and her ability to win. Perhaps, looking back, she should have been a little bit angrier over her loss in Leipzig (see below.)
Postscript
Kleinova went on to do well in the tournament, winning her next 2 qualifying matches to the loss of oly 4 games, and finally going out to Hingis in the 2nd round of the main draw after a tough first set. Again Jana seems to have caught an on-form player in the 1st Round..

Jana Seeded 4th for Moscow Qualifying

As 4th seed for qualifying in the Tier 1 Moscow Tournament, Jana has a good opportunity to make it through to the main draw.
Her first match is with Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic. Also in her quarter of the draw are Andrea Glass of Germany and 8th seed, Adriana Gersi, also of the Czech Republic. Matches begin at 10am on Saturday 29th September.
Go Jana! and Good Luck!

Leipzig loss doesn't faze Jana

Jana was unfazed by her 4-6 4-6 first round loss to Elena Likhovtseva at the Sparkassen Cup. She felt the match was close, and that she had gained from the event. "I'm not too unhappy with my match," an optimistic Kandarr added. "If I work more consistently I think I can make the leap into the top 30 or 40 next year - and that is my target."
Jana also starred in the launch of a new Mercedes Sports Car at the tournament.

Jana gets Wild Card to meet Likhovtseva at Liepzig

The organising committee for this week's Tier 2 tournament at Liepzig have given Jana the Birthday Present of a Wild Card into the Main Draw.
Jana grew up very nearby in Halle and is a local favourite. The other Wild Card entry went to Iva Majoli. In the main draw Jana gets to meet Elena Likhovtseva of Russia again, just over a month after their last first round meeting in Toronto.
It isn't the best possible first round draw for Jana, she doesn't seem to have had a lot of easy draws lately, but it isn't the worst draw she could have got either.

Jana beat Elena at the Sydney Olympics last year, so let's hope Jana can reverse the Toronto result this week in Leipzig!

Another Withdrawal

For the second week running, Jana has withdrawn from a tournament just before the start. Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Amy Frazier have also withdrawn from the Princess Cup Tournament in Tokyo this weekend. The American players have withdrawn in response to the New York bombing. Jana's reason for withdrawal is not stated. There are no reports of her being injured, so hopefully she will be fit and ready for Leipzig and the European Indoor season.

Jana withdraws from Brazil Open

So far no reason has emerged, but Jana has clearly withdrawn from the Tier 2 event in Brazil. It was a long way to go for one tournament, which may account for the weak entry field. But it could have been a good opportunity for Jana to have picked up some ranking points - and dollars!

Future plans are not known, but she seems very committed to the Leipzig Sparkassen Cup at the end of September. See Article.

Jana loses out in US Open Trainer Delay.

Jana's recent run of poor luck continued at the US Open. The third tournament in a row where she has had a very tough first round draw against a high-ranking hard-court performer. Jana was giving seeded American Chanda Rubin a competitive match at 3-4 in the third set, when Chanda became sick. The trainer was called, but failed to arrive for a full ten minutes whilst Jana waited and waited. The trainer finally came and treated Chanda, but by then the delay was even longer. There is only supposed to be a five minute delay for injury, but the fault was with the organisers, not Chanda. When play began again Jana had lost all her momentum and lost the next two games swiftly to a resurgent Chanda. Losing 4-6 6-3 3-6

Jana thus loses a lot of ranking points and the chance to go further in the tournament. Very bad news. It's particularly bad when in different circumstances she could have gone a good way in this tournament.

Stiff draw for Jana at Manhattan Beach, LA

Jana has a tough draw at the estyle.com Classic tournament in California, but there are also huge opportunities. Jana's 1st round meeting is scheduled to be with 53 ranked Lilia Osterloh of the USA, who could be a tough opponent.
Jana has been playing well recently, though, and if she wins through, she faces No 1 seed, Martina Hingis in the 2nd Round!
Let's hope Jana plays as well as she did against Frazier and Mauresmo!

NEWSFLASH! Great win for Jana!

Today Jana beat 6th seed Amy Frazier in three sets, 5-7, 6-7, 6-3!
She could have won in two, having led 5-2 in the second, but over all she played an excellent game, beating a good hardcourt player on her home ground.
Jana will get bonus ranking points for the win over world No 20.

Afterburn?

Both of Jana's opponents at Wimbledon seem to have been fired-up by the experience, reaching the finals of their subsequent tournaments. Schnyder was losing finalist in Vienna, while Medina-Garriguez won in Palermo.
Let's hope it affects Jana the same way.
