Kandarr defeated by Elena Likhovtseva, but she still gets
her Mercedes premiere
Leipzig, September 24, 2001
German beauty Jana Kandarr was not able to
earn herself the birthday present of a place in the
second round of Leipzig's Sparkassen Cup. The 25 year old
German from Halle/Saale lost her first round match to
last year's finalist, Elena Likhovtseva (RUS) 4:6 and 4:6.
"I felt good, and I could have won it." Jana
said after the game. "I wasn't as nervous as Elena
was. I just couldn't make the most of my opportunities on
the key points."
Despite her loss, she saw a positive side to her
appearance at the Tennis Grand Prix. "I'm not too
unhappy with my match," an optimistic Kandarr added.
"If I work more consistently I think I can make the
leap into the top 30 or 40 next year - and that is my
target."
On her 25th birthday on Friday Kandarr was given a
Strawberry Cream Cake, an over-sized tulip and a symbolic
Wild Card by the tournament directors. On Monday night
the six foot tall tennis-model saw another outstanding
sight in the company of 600 invited guests. Together with
Czech player, Kveta Hrdlickova, Jana was driven into
Court Number One in the newest Mercedes sports model, the
SL 500. Four camera teams and a dozen photographers
recorded the spectacle, which follows the world premiere
of this elegant sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Leipzig will now have the SL on display before anywhere
else in Europe.
Wilfried Mohren (MDR-TV Head of Sport) said "Today
Leipzig has the new Mercedes SL, our next job is to bring
the 2012 Olympic Games to Leipzig."
