Jana at German Open

Jana reappeared on the WTA circuit at the Mastercard German Open in Berlin. Once again Jana did not receive a wild-card into the main draw of this Tier 1 tournament. In the first round of qualifying Jana beat Antonella Serra-Zanetti of Italy, 6-2 6-2, but she fell at the final hurdle, losing 1-6 2-6 to Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia.

It was another unlucky draw for Jana, since Fabiola was probably the highest ranked player in the qualifying draw, and was in particularly good form this week, going on to reach the quarter-finals of the main draw.

Jana "so-close" to Great win in Colombia

Jana came within two points of beating the 2nd seed at the Copa Colsanitas
Tier 3 WTA Championships in Bogota Colombia today.

After a slow start in the first set, Jana played World Ranked No 30, Katerina Srebotnik of Slovakia to a wafer-tight finish, finally losing 2-6 7-6(3) 6-7(5) in the second round of the tournament. She served 8 aces in the match.

Jana had won her first round Match 3-6 6-1 6-0 against Colombian Romy Farah.

Jana should take encouragement from the closeness of this match, and her improved form at this tournament.

Early Loss for Jana in Melbourne

Jana had an early loss to Elena Tatarkova in Qualifying for the Australian Open Grand Slam Tournament in Melbourne Australia.

It was a close match, but unfortunately, after taking the first set, Jana came out second overall, ending her Australian Open Challenge this year.
The score was 6-3 4-6 2-6.

Jana Playing in Fewer WTA Tournaments this Year

Jana was listed to play in qualifying for a couple of tournaments running up to the Australian Open at Melbourne this January. However she has announced that she will be playing less tennis on the WTA circuit this year. She has become a university student in Berlin, and will therefore have less time to play on the world tennis tour.

She has signed for the Red/White Berlin team in the German Tennis League, and will play other tournaments when she can.

Hopefully this does not herald a loss of interest in WTA tennis by Jana, who remains a very talented player with the potential to reach the Top 30. However Jana was unlucky to fall out of the top 100 rankings in August 2002, and without a Top 100 rank, it is very hard for players to gain entry to the key tournaments that finance much of the travel involved in following the full world tour.

No Appearance at Leipzig

Jana's birthday on the 21st usually coincides with an appearance at her hometown tournament at Leipzig, the Sparkassen Cup. This year, however, Jana is not appearing. It could be because she has not gained a wildcard entry for the tournament this year. Two other German players have been given wildcards along with the lowly ranked Belgian, Elke Clijsters, whose main claim to fame is being sister of the more well-known Kim.

It's sad to see Jana missing from this tournament, and without a WTA tournament to play in this week. Hopefully she will be there next year, and get more consideration from the wildcard committee.

US Open Qualifying

After only a couple of weeks in North America this year, Jana entered the US Open Qualifying at Flushing Meadow, New York. She had good victories against Elena Baltacha of Britain, and Evelyn Fauth of Austria. Both wins were by the same score ~ 6-4 6-3.

However Jana lost her third round battle against top seeded Denisa Chladkova of Slovakia 6-1 6-4, and just missed entry to the Main Draw.

Playing for Points in Poland

Jana had a lot of ranking points to defend this week, having reached the Quarter-finals of the Bank of the West Tournament in California last year.

This year she was at the Prokom Idea Open in Poland, having to qualify to gain entry to the main draw. Jana started well, beating Ukrainian, A Zaparozhanova 7-5 6-0 in the first round of qualifying, and M Domachowska of Poland 6-1 6-3 in the second round. In the third round, however, she fell victim to
M Goloviznina of Russia, 2-6 5-7, despite racing to a 4-0 lead in the final set.

Fortunately Jana had done well enough to get placed in the Main Draw as a lucky loser. Here she met Mariana Diaz-Oliva of Argentina, fresh from her tournament win in Palermo, in the First Round. Fortunately Jana won convincingly 6-4 7-5.
In the second Round she met Magui Serna of Spain, but was outlasted 6-4 2-6 3-6, again just failing to reach her first Quarter-final of the year.

First Round Victory in Palermo

Jana scored an impressive First Round Victory over fellow German, Greta Arn in Palermo this evening. In the featured late evening match on Centre Court, Jana beat 4th seeded Greta with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 score.

Sadly Jana failed in her attempt to reach the quarter-final, losing a close match to fancied young Russian player, Ekaterina Syssoyeva 4-6, 7-6(5)

Tanasugarn Foils Jana Again

For the second Grand Slam in a row, Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand halted Jana's progress to the third round. Following her close loss to the Thai player in the 2nd Round at Roland Garros, Jana again lost to the 20th Seed in her 2nd round match at Wimbledon today. The score was 3-6 4-6, but in truth it was another tight match in which Jana did not manage to grasp her chances for victory. In the final set, Jana won 40 points to Tamarine's 42, but she failed to make use of seven break points, managing to convert only one of them.

Wimbledon - Jana Defeats Garbin in First Round

In a straight sets victory, Jana defeated Tathiana Garbin of Italy to progress to the 2nd Round of the Wimbledon Championships. In the 7-6 6-3 victory, Jana served five aces to the Italian player's one, making 14 unforced errors to the 83-ranked Garbin's 30. There were no breaks of serve in the first set, which went to a tiebreak which Jana won 7-4. In the second set there were five breaks of serve overall, but Jana used her returning and net-rushing skills to discomfort her opponent, punishing Garbin's 2nd serve to take the match.

In the next round she is scheduled for a rerun of her Paris encounter with Tamarine Tanasaugarn of Thailand - hopefully with a different result this time!

Grass Court Win in Birmingham

Jana gained a convincing 6-2 6-2 win over former German No 1 player Marlene Weingartner this week. The victory was at the DFS Classic Grass Court Tournament at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The victory in this all-German clash earned Jana a second round meeting with 2nd Seeded Sandrine Testud of France. Unfortunately Jana lost to the World Number 10. 1-6 3-6.

Jana Misses Big Win

Jana failed in her attempt to make her way into the third round at Roland Garros for the first time. Her match with 17th-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand ended in a tight 4-6 6-1 3-6 loss. Jana had opportunities in this televised match, after taking an early lead in the nervous first set. Strong serving and some blistering returns gave Tamarine a lot of trouble. But Jana was not aggressive enough to take the set, and was eventually worn down by the persistent Thai.
In the second set Jana played with more aggression and belief - as she had in the previous round, breaking Tamarine convincingly to take a 6-1 lead with some brilliant forehand winners. She went on to lead 2-0 in the final set, but Tanausagarn began playing better. Jana was drawn back to 3-5, and finally lost her serve on a double fault. Both players won 13 games in the match. Sadly Jana didn't win the right thirteen.

Overall a good performance, marred by nerves at key points.
Unfortunately Jana will still go down in the rankings since she will lose the bonus points from her big win over Amelie Mauresmo here last year.

29th May 2002

Good Win at Roland Garros

Jana had a good win in the First Round at the Paris Open, Roland Garros today. She beat French player Laurence Andretto 6-3 6-0.
Jana played a strong game with good serving, great returns and some excellent winners that painted the lines.

After the match she said "I had a minor personal crisis in November and December. And in tennis it is very difficult when one starts playing badly to get back ones self-belief. I've fought to put my negative emotions behind me."

New Photos of Jana

Thanks to photographer, John Morris, we have some photographs of Jana which he took at the Australian Open in Melbourne this year and last.

Jana was a little unwell at this year's Australian Open, and I think that shows in the odd photo. However there are some excellent shots of our star.
You can see the pictures in

Jana to Boycott German Events?

It is reported that Jana's trainer has announced that she is not likely to be playing in the big tennis tournaments at Hamburg and Berlin this Spring. No reason has been given for this, but in past years Jana has expressed her displeasure that she has been overlooked for Main Draw Wild Cards to these prestigious events.
Wild Cards normally go to local players, allowing them direct entry to top level events without having to battle through qualification rounds. This year Hamburg organisers have given the first Wild Card entry to Anna Kournikova.

Jana is expected to enter the Croatian BOL tournament and the J&S Cup in Warsaw instead.

Loss to Kuti Kis

Jana lost her 2nd Round match in Hungary to local favourite, Rita Kuti-Kis, missing a chance to reach the quarter-finals of the Budapest Open.
From the scoreline, it seems that nerves again played a part in Jana's loss, since she went down 0-6 in the First set. The second was a closer 5-7.

Jana's first round win will lift her back into the Top 100 after her big loss of points in Estoril.

Great First Round Win in Budapest

Today Jana put last weeks disappointments behind her to gain an upset victory over 8th Seed, Barbara Schwartz of Austria at the Hungarian Open in Budapest.
Jana fought back hard from a close, first set loss to win convincingly
4-6 6-1 6-2.
Good luck on the Red Clay, Jana.

Bad News from Estoril

After missing the first red clay tournament of the European season in Porto last week, Jana lost her first round match at the Estoril tournament, also in Portugal, to Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia 6-7(3) 6-2

This is bad news because Jana had a lot of points to defend in this tournament, in which she reached the Semi-final last year. This will mean a big drop in the rankings for Jana unless she can improve her game very quickly.
Next week she is scheduled to play Budapest.
Better luck there!

Early loss in Miami

Jana lost her first round match at the Tier 1 Nasdaq 100 Open in Miami.
She had a tough draw against an on-form Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, who had reached the Semi-Finals of the tournament at Indian Wells.
Jana made a nervous start to the 1st set. Clearly still having trouble with her serve, she gave away eight double faults in her 0-6 3-6 loss.

Hopefully she will resume her rise back to form in her next tournament , which is scheduled to be the clay-court event at Porto, Portugal.

Jana makes Progress at Indian Wells

The Tier 1 WTA tournament at Indian Wells California gave Jana her second Main Draw win of the year as her form continued to show improvement. Jana beat the higher-ranked Spanish player, Gala Leon-Garcia, in her first round match in straight sets, the score 6-4 6-4.

Her second round match was against 14th seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn from Thailand, which unfortunately she lost 2-6 3-6. She seemed to have some trouble with her serve in this match, and Tamarine is always a tough opponent.

Acapulco Tournament

Jana had her first main draw win this year at the Mexican Open Tournament in Acapulco this Tuesday. She beat Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary in two sets 6-4 7-6.
A welcome return to form for Jana.
In her second round match Jana met Emilie Loit of France, taking the first set 6-3. She lost the second set 4-6, but after an early break in the third set, and a point to go 4-2 ahead, she faltered to lose 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 in a close match.

Better News from Paris

Fans of Jana will be glad of some better news from the Paris Indoor Tournament, where at last Jana broke her long losing streak, defeating Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay in two short sets 6-4 6-1 in the first round of qualifying.

On Sunday she had a very close three setter with Miriam Oremans of Holland, finally losing 3-6 6-1 4-6. A very creditable result, if a pity that she didn't take the match. But it is a sign that Jana may at last be getting back to form.

Jana "No-show" in Tokyo

Despite being scheduled to play at the Toray Pan-Pacific tournament in Japan, Jana did not take part. This could be due to her early exit in Melbourne.
It was probably a good idea for Jana to take a break from this tournament and try to settle her game for the European indoor and clay-court season.

14th January 2002

Australian Open

More bad news for Jana's fans from the Australian Open.

Jana lost in the first round of the year's first Grand Slam, in a nervous performance against Nuria Llagostera of Spain. The score of 0-6 1-6 reflected the total of 30 unforced errors Jana made in this match. Reports speak of Jana appearing to have absolutely no confidence towards the end of the match, and it seemed a struggle for her to hit anything into court.

Let's hope that Jana can get over this disappointment quickly and manages to regain her form.

First Round Loss at Canberra

A poor start to the New Year at the Canberra Women's Classic for Jana, with a first round loss to fiesty American. Lilia Osterloh.

Jana had a tough first round draw again, but still has not yet got back to her winning ways. Let's hope Jana gets back into form for next week's Australian Open. In 2000, she reached the fourth round of this Grand Slam event.
