Kandarr
ousts Frazier
Bank of the West
Tournament, Stanford California
2nd Round: July 26th 2001
Sixth-seeded American Amy Frazier was upset by
unseeded German Jana Kandarr 7-5 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 on a hot
and breezy day at Stanford University.
FIRST SERVE
Utilizing blistering groundstrokes and an authoritative
first serve, the tall and rangy Kandarr seemed to have
her match against Frazier under control in the second set
when serving for the match at 5-3.
But the willowy German grew nervous and allowed Frazier
to grind her way back.
In the tiebreaker, Frazier came up with a series of
stunning winners, forcing an increasingly frustrated
Kandarr to hit a ball out of the stadium and earn herself
a warning from the chair umpire.
``I usually don't get angry and break rackets and stuff
like that,'' Kandarr said. ``But she played unbelievable
tennis in the tiebreaker and that made me really angry. I
was being too negative.''
But Kandarr regained her edge in the third set,
stretching Frazier in brutal rallies and controlling the
court with her forehand. She broke Frazier's serve for
the second time in the set to take the final game.
``It's tough mentally when you lose a second set like
that but I hung in there and thought positive,'' Kandarr
said. ``I thought my fitness was better than hers and I
would wear her down.''
Kandarr will now play second seed Lindsay Davenport in
the quarter final.
