Jana Kandarr: Qualifier or Wildcard?

The attractive Number 44 ranked tennis player in the world is coming to Leipzig's Sparkassen Cup.

As number 44, Jana Kandarr now ranks among the world's top tennis professionals. Yet the 24 year-old Halle native will still have to battle a strong field of prospective entrants in order to qualify for the Leipzig Sparkassen Cup, that is unless she gains entry through a wild card. Despite this she plans to take part in the 565,000 dollar tournament which runs from the 22nd to the 30th of September. "It will be great to be here," she said. "To see the rest of my family again and all that has changed in Halle. After all, I spent my whole childhood in this area."

The 1.81 meter tall beauty is very pleased with her current season, and especially with reaching the Top 50. "With a reasonable winter season, I'll be in a perfect starting position for next year. Concentrating on Leipzig means that I'll be prepared for the indoor court season a lot earlier."

The state of German women's tennis once Anke Huber retires does not unduly alarm her. "We lack only the absolute top players. Everyone has their own potential, so we can't really expect that every player is always going to make it to the top. It's the very high standard that the German players are always measured against that makes them all seem so wretched."

Jana also emphasises the strong boom in interest for women's tennis. "Women's tennis is getting much more colourful and attractive. There are so many new young faces, who all play a richer, more varied type of tennis than the previous generation. Personally, though, I'd rather watch men's tennis - but that's for other reasons..."
