Areas
are planted to coconut for the largest proportion of
about 59.14% of the total area planted to crops. Rice
lands comes next which occupies about 23.5% of the total
area, followed by fruits and citrus with 14.37%; bananas,
1.67% and vegetables, 1.32%.
It
can be noted that areas planted to coconut and rice
constant from 1990 to 1995. No increase or decrease
in area planted to these crops was recorded. Increase
in area through minimal are recorded only in areas planted
to bananas fruits/citrus and vegetables.
Rice
lands in barangay San Juan and Longos are 50.4% irrigated
while those in San Antonio are entirely rain fed except
for some areas, which are spring-water irrigated. The
municipal agriculturist estimates the total irrigated
area at 346.5 hectares, approximately about 98% of the
total rice lands.
In
1990, coconut production is showed an average yield
of 60 nuts per tree totaling to about 5.31 millions
nuts. However, there has been a declining trend in coconut
production, with only 22 nuts per tree in 1994. These
have been attributed to climatic changes in the area.
Rice
production on the other hand, showed an increasing trend,
though at a minimal level. Area planted to rice remains
constant. Rice harvest increased from 3.0 MT to 3.5
MT from 1990 to 1994 respectively. Considering the total
population of 17.783. The present production is more
than enough for the requirements of the population.
Barangay
surveys showed a total farm household of 1,315. With
the total agricultural crop area of 1,496.3 hectares,
the current farm household to cropland ratio is 1:1.14
hectares per farm household and about .26 hectares of
rice land per household is 1:26. Such proportion is
below subsistence level.
As
the farming facilities, equipment and services are existing
irrigation facilities, that contribute to rice yields
farm-to-market roads that facilitate movement or marketing
of goods and services; rice mills and storage facilities
and other service facilities.
There
are three communal irrigation systems (CIS) in the municipality,
which are established, operated and maintained by the
National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and farmers
under the irrigators' Service Association (ISA). The
three CIS are the San Juan Communal Irrigation System
55.5 hectares and the Longos Communal Irrigation System
covering an area of 60 hectares. There are also existing
forms of spring irrigation in Barangay San Antonio specifically
in the sitios of Lunao, Sala and Kalayaan covering an
estimated area of 195.5 hectares.
The
San Juan and Kalayaan CIS utilize the San Juan River
and series of springs as their sources off water supply.
The Longos CIS utilizes only a series of springs. All
these irrigation systems service the entire area along
Laguna de Bay.
