#1 Tampa Bay v. #8 NY Islanders Islanders won three of the four regular season meetings, but I think TB will get to DiPietro over a seven-game series. Pick: Lightning
#2 Boston v. #7 Montreal Joe Thorntons mysterious upper-body injury sure hit at the wrong time. As was the case two years ago, look for the Bruins to get an early vacation. Pick: Habs
#3 Philadelphia v. #6 New Jersey Only one point separated the two teams in the Atlantic Division. Martin Brodeur v. Sean Burke is the difference here. Pick: Devils
#4 Toronto v. #5 Ottawa Leaf fans continue to wait for a championship, and wait, and wait, and wait. Patrick Lalime scored three shutouts in a first-round series last year, expect more of the same here. Pick: Senators.#1 Detroit v. #8 Nashville After six long years, Nashville will finally host an NHL playoff game, and their arena will be packed. Unfortunately most will comprise of relocated Detroit fans who work at the local Saturn plant, giving the Wings even more fan support than they already enjoy on the road. Detroits goaltending situation is a mess, but they should easily get past Round 1. Pick: Wings
#2 San Jose v. #7 St. Louis Whew, that was close!!! But the Blues qualify for the playoffs for a 25th straight year, and for a 25th straight year they will watch someone else skate with the Cup. Pick: Sharks
#3 Vancouver v. #6 Calgary Canucks recovered from the Todd Bertuzzi aftermath enough to win the division, but will be in big trouble trying to solve Mikka Kiprusoff, who led the world in GAA. Pick: Flames
#4 Colorado v. #5 Dallas Selanne and Kariya have already been smashing disappointments and now Kariyas hurt. And would you want to trust Forsbergs groin for the next shift??? Turcos recent four-game suspension was a blessing in disguise, and hell be the difference here. Pick: Stars1 ![]() |

PLAYOFF OBSERVATIONS It has not been a good week for the league however, as far as cheapshots (or dispciplinary action) are concerned. It all started with the now infamous McLaren hit on Richard Zednik, which remains as graphic as ever even after seeing the replay for the 500th time. That was followed the next night by questionable hits that knocked out the Islanders Kenny Jonsson (concussion) and Michael Peca (torn ACL). Neither Toronto player involved in that was suspended. And then we have Islander goon Eric Cairns kicking an opponent during a fight. He did manage to score a one game suspension for that. Not to mention a lot of catfighting between the coaches in the waning seconds of Game 6 between COL/LA. Could it get even worse in round 2??? PLAYOFF HEADLINES...
