What is the history of Kaakbay ?
|
The TPYD seminar sponsored by PYDI and YADO was divided into two phases, namely: phase 1 which was the seminar proper on April 2 and 3 at the Science and Technology Training Center (STTC), and phase 2 which was the immersion and actual visitation to communities at Kamasi Madrasah, Barangay Ligaya, and the integration and group sharing at Marist Beach, Bawing on April 8.
By April 8, 2002, it was agreed among the attending delegates of the TPYD seminar that an organization was worth establishing, with themselves as initial members, because of the potential the group possesses. All were presidents, vice-presidents, ex-presidents, or high ranking officers of at least two organizations and were, therefore, experienced student leaders. Great things could be accomplished.
An adhoc committee was formed on that same day to prepare and organize a constitutional commission which would formally establish the existence of the organization. The name "Kaakbay-TPYD" was voted by the body as the official name. On April 20, 2002, the constitutional commission formally drafted the Constitution and By-laws of Kaakbay and subsequently conducted an election of officers on the same day. On April 21, 2002, the Fitmart bombing incident caused the officers of the organization to hold a caucus. They subsequently agreed that a position paper condemning such act of terrorism be made and publicized, so as to help prevent the general populace of Gen. Santos City from experiencing panic and unwarranted paranoia.
On April 23, 2002, the officers and members of Kaakbay were invited as representatives of the youth sector during the City Disaster Coordinating Council meeting. In the absence of a move by the other sectors of society to help ease the tension pervading in the city, Kaakbay publicly presented the position paper to the assembled elders gathered and conveyed to them that "the youth sector was also affected, the youth sector was also concerned, and the youth sector would like to be involved in the fight against this form of violence." They then announced that, as evidence of their part in this fight, KAAKBAY was in the process of organizing a youth sector-wide mass action in the form of a Walk for Peace traversing the major thoroughfares of the city as a way of condemning the bombing incident. The community leaders present immediately reacted, saying that it was not only the youth sector that was affected but the whole society of General Santos City. They then made a counter-proposal that a multi-sectoral walk for peace be organized by KAAKBAY and held at the soonest possible time, promptly pledging their 100% support and presence in the event.
From then on, until May 4, 2002, the officers and members of Kaakbay conducted information campaigns promoting the Multi-Sectoral Walk for Peace activity to the masses through radio hopping, TV interviews, newspaper interviews, and street posting.
