SIDLAK
SIDLAK YOUTH PUBLICATION
(Revival of the Official Publication of the
Youth of Gen. Santos City for Peace Advocacy)

"Using the Voice of the Youth in Uniting the Tri-People"

Type of Issue: Magazine
No. of pages: 40
Frequency of release: Twice a year
Coverage: SOCSKSARGEN
No. of copies: 10,000

Once under the supervision of the Youth Affairs Development Office, Sidlak was closed down when former Mayor Adelbert W. Antonino came into office. Since then, it had been an elusive dream of many editors and writers from the youth sector to revive the prestigious paper. Though attempts had been made to revive the publication, the city government had decided to close it down permanently.

It is the intent of KAAKBAY to absorb Sidlak as part of its Information-Education-Communication (IEC) Program in relation to its peace-building efforts. This shall serve as the official organ of the Youth of SOCSKSARGEN. KAAKBAY, as one of the leading youth organizations in this city nowadays AND as a conglomeration of dynamic student leaders, youth achievers and young professionals - with all its efforts and by all means, is very interested in finding a way for the integration of Sidlak as its publication arm. Through this process, KAAKBAY-TPYD will not only have a paper wherein which to voice out the organization's peace advocacy programs and trainings but it could also help in the renaissance of the long-been closed publication of the youth in the city.

The closure of Sidlak during the time of Mayor Antonino surely affected the youth sector of the city. The young bloods that belong to the intellectuals were deprived of the opportunity to have easy access to information dissemination for the benefit of their fellow young minds that dwell in this city. All budding writers who were at the height of their search for quality journalistic skills and strategies during the closure of the organ were as well certainly not given the chance to enjoy and feel the noble feeling of serving their fellow young individuals through the use of the mighty power of the pen - through responsible journalism.

The "rebirth" of Sidlak is undisputedly vital, especially for the youth sector in this region. KAAKBAY is positively looking forward to reviving the paper after the publication's years of inexistence with a new aim: That of using the organ as a means to spread and promote the Culture of Peace. KAAKBAY nowadays boasts of a pool of excellent writers. We have in our ranks the best and finest journalistic talents from the youth, crossing campus boundaries and ideological differences and creating a publication like none other in the annals of this region. We believe that in making a history in the field of journalism, Sidlak is the best tool that the KAAKBAY needs towards far more effective news proliferation and information dissemination. One supporting reason to this argument is the fact that Sidlak had already established a prestige in the past. All that is needed is for it to "shine" again - as it should and must be - for the benefit of all young bloods in this region.

The office of the Sidlak Publication shall be at the A. Acharon Sports Complex, the current headquarters of KAAKBAY.

The following are the superb campus writers and journalists who are now peace-builders that KAAKBAY - TPYD boasts these days:

It is hoped that the Youth Affairs Development Office (YADO), as it had previously done, would shoulder the funding of Sidlak's revival this year. However, if it could not lobby this concern with the Local Government Unit of General Santos City, KAAKBAY would ask for YADO's consent and approval that Sidlak's publishing rights be turned over to KAAKBAY in order for it to seek a funding or donor agency outside the local government which could shoulder the financial needs of the paper. Nevertheless, a plan is in the works to circulate a Sidlak Newsletter, while the paper itself is in hiatus, as a precursor to Sidlak's eventual relaunching. The cost of this newsletter would be from the generous pockets of its own members and of concerned individuals who wish Sidlak to eventually "shine" again.
