MULTI-SECTORAL WALK FOR PEACE
May 4, 2002
General Santos City
After the Fitmart bombing incident of April 21, 2002, the founding members of KAAKBAY held a caucus and decided to make a public statement via position paper condemning the aforesaid terroristic act and calling on all the sectors of society - from the government sector, the private sector, to the civil society sector - in General Santos City to stand up and assert in most vocal terms their right to live peacefully in this city. It was a show of nonviolent defiance against the terrorists responsible for the bombing. For the members of KAAKBAY who had at that time just concluded the drafting of their constitution and the election of the organization's first ever set of officers, it was a baptism of fire no one had expected in their wildest dreams. The mayor himself, Engr. Pedro B. Acharon Jr., the city councilors and the local government employees, the leaders of the private and business sectors, other non-government organizations (NGO's), private voluntary organizations (PVO's), religious organizations, the major parishes of the city, the different barangay leaders and their constituents, and the civil society organizations supported KAAKBAY and the youth sector as they led the multi-sectoral masses in a united act of defiance against terrorism evidenced by the Fitmart bombing incident which claimed 15 lives and wounded more than 60 others.
The theme of the Walk for Peace was "TINDOG GENSAN, PADAYON GENSAN!" (Get up Gensan! Continue Gensan!). Said theme had unexpectedly begotten several versions as one major city-level activity after another was subsequently held. The Walk for Peace saw a youth organization initiate a unifying move against a common threat - terrorism, thereby diffusing inter-cultural tension which could possibly trigger inter-sectoral violence brought about by the incident. In addition to Mayor Acharon, Acting President Manuel Yaphuckon of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, PS/Supt. Rolando Noveno of PNP-PRO 12, and Chancellor Macapado Muslim of Mindanao State University gave their respective inspirational speeches, thanking KAAKBAY for being the youth organization which had initiated a move that would unite all the people of this city against a general menace. KAAKBAY President Tommy Pangcoga gave the opening remarks, while KAAKBAY Vice President for Majority Affairs Nonafleur Rodriguez made the closing remarks. To the eyes of some, the Walk for Peace was witnessed as a "people power of General Santos" where all sectors of society set aside their differences and made a united stand against all those who would threaten their city. Said event was proof that the youth sector still continues to play an instrumental role in the affairs of our society.
