| Going Ghost Hunting? Check out our tips and advice for the novice or pro. Ghost Hunters come from all walks of life, some out of curiosity and thrill and some for the research and study of ghosts and ghostly phenomena. What ever the case maybe, you have to have some basic knowledge on just what it is you are doing. Why are you doing it? Are you prepared for what might or might not happen? Here is some information that may be useful to the beginner. If you know of anything I may of left out, please, by all means send us an email! Please, no matter what your reason is for hunting ghosties, and stuff, just remember the first rule....SAFETY FIRST! ENJOY! |
| 1.) THINK SAFE - Please remember the rule of safety and DO NOT do anything or go anywhere where you could put you, your team or others in danger. Always carry a First Aid Kit for emergencies. Never go Alone to any area to investigate. Go in groups of two or more. Always carry a cell phone for emergencies. 2.) Always carry your drivers license or other form of identification at all times. 3.) Never Trespass on private property - Always ask permission from the owner or care taker to enter an area you are interested in investigating. 4.) Respect the area and the people around you. - Make sure the area you are investigating is left the way you found it. Don't use foul language or disrespect others. 5.) DO NOT SMOKE or use ALCOHOL during an investigation. - The smoke may cause false anomalies or create a mist on film. 6.) DO NOT wear heavy perfumes or deoderants - You will want to be able to smell odors. Perfumes and deoderants that are heavy make a scent film in the nose and causes a dulling of the senses that you use to smell with. The Nose Knows! 7.) Keep in mind that you are there to conduct an investigation - Be proffessional, do what you are there to do....INVESTIGATE! 8.) Before begining an investigation - it is always a good idea to visit the area during the daylight, get a feel for the area, map out the area and interview witnesses when possible. You can then mark on your map where previous activity took place, previous readings, etc. After the investigation you can compare notes from daytime to nightime. 9.) Always check all your equipment before starting off to an investigation - Make sure all your equipment is in working order, make sure you have enough film, batteries, etc. 10.) Keep extra batteries and tapes - Spirits draw energy, you could use up lot's of batteries during one investigation. 11.) Before you go into the actual investigation - Your group might want to say sort of prayer for protection. Though optional, prayer can help keep you protected from spirits who might not be pleasant. 12.) Never use a OUIJA board or conduct a Seance during an investigation - Using such tools to communicate with spirits may lead to the manifestation of malevolent entities. 13.) When taking photographs - Do Not take photo's of reflecting objects such as mirrors, glass, appliances and even still waters or ponds, they can produce false anomalies. Never take a picture directly into the sun. (See The Gallery ). make sure you remove your camera straps before taking photograph's. Keep your len's clean, you might want to clean it often during your investigation.Keep your fingers and other item's away from the camera lens. Never take pictures during bad weather. Rain, Sleet, Snow, Fog and even Cold weather can produce moisture on your lens or false anomalies that you might just mistake for orbs. Also, beware of flying dust, this can also create a false anomaly. 14.) Always Document - Especially after change in temprature, noise, smell, or anythig unusual. Write down what it was, the time , and location. You can go back later to re-create the experience. 15.) Always Research - The background information on the location of the paranormal activity. Any changes made to the property, deaths, make sure it does not sit on an old burial ground, etc. 16.) Be QUIET - When trying to capture EVP's. You want to capture un-natural noises not natural noises. 17.) ALWAYS BE SKEPTICAL - When looking for explanations of paranormal activity, always rule out the "Natural" explanation. Don't jump to any conclusions right away just because you see some strange lights or smell odd odors like lilac's when there are no lilac's around. Dig for answers. That strange ghost light you saw just might be a car headlight off in the distance. You want to prove what it is not, not what it is. 18.) Check the Negatives of the Film - Just because you see something strange on the photo itself, check the negatives, there might lie an explanation of that strange dot in the background. If you are not sure, have an expert check it. They can help distinguish between a dust particle and a scratch. 19.) Use Common Sense - This list can go on and on, but, I know you get the picture. Use common sense before, during and after an investigation. If you happen to encounter a ghostie during an investigation, remain calm, breathe. After the shock, try and take pictures or video tape it. Do Not discuss your investigation with anyone except for those on your team until all evidence has been processed and analyzed. If the area that you investigated was reported to you, share your findings with whoever reported it. For more tips and information on Ghost Hunting visit: The Shadowlands |
