How long is Basic Training? Job Training?

The length of your Basic Training depends on what type of job you select at the time of your enlistment. If you pick a Combat Arms specialty (Infantry, Field Artillery, Tank Crewmember), you will most likely attend One Station Unit Training (OSUT) which is Basic and Advanced Training combined. This type of training lasts anywhere from 16 to 20 weeks, with one week inprocessing. If you pick a Support or Service Support specialty (Health Care Specialist, Human Resources Specialist, Motor Transport Operator) you will attend 9 weeks of Basic Training, with one week inprocessing.

The length of Job Training can last anywhere from 6 weeks (Motor Transport Operator) to one full year (Cryptologic Linguist/Analyst). The amount of time that you spend in job training will depend on the job you select at enlistment.

Will I get sent to Iraq?

The quickest, and most honest, answer is: we dont know. America is currently engaged in the longest sustained conflict in over 30 years. The fact is, however, we are currently recruiting for qualified men and women who will be part of the Army and Army Reserves in 2005 and 2006. Most individuals who enlist today will not leave for Basic Training for two to three months. After two and a half months in Basic Training, you will go through Advanced Individual Training, which can last anywhere from one and a half months up to one full year. Only after you are fully qualified to execute the job that you enlisted for, are you assigned to a duty station.

Use this scenario for an example: a recent graduate from Arundel High School enlists 1 July 2004 for the MOS 88M, Motor Transport Operator, which is a 6 week training course, with a date for Basic Training of 1 September 2004. That Soldier will not graduate Basic Training until approximately 10 November. They will then begin their job training on 15 November, and graduate approximately 22 December. After taking vacation to spend time with their family over Christmas and New Years, the Soldier then reports to their unit 2 January, 2005. This example uses one of the shortest job training lengths possible.

Just as we cannot predict what will happen in the world tomorrow, we cannot predict what will happen in the world in six months. We can give you an example: PV2 Jonathan Hamilton (whose information you can see on the Success Stories section of this website) enlisted for the MOS 92F, Petroleum Supply Specialist, which has a training length of two months. Upon graduation from his job training, he was selected for six more weeks of schooling, and reported to Fort Hood, Texas, in March, 2004. When he reported, his unit was still deployed to Iraq; instead of sending PV2 Hamilton directly over to his unit, he remained at Fort Hood until his unit returned. He said that he has been told that his unit MIGHT returnsometimes towards the end of next year.

How can I be sure that the job I enlist for is the job I am going to get?

Every individual who enlists in the United States Army is given a written guarantee that they will be trained for the job they selected. Prior to signing your enlistment contract, you will be given a reservation sheet that shows the job you selected, any type of bonuses or college payments that are associated with that job, and the date you will leave for Basic Training. If your contract does not reflect everything on your reservation sheet, you simply inform your Guidance Counselor and they will fix it.

Can I choose where I am going to go to Basic Training? Where I am going to be stationed?

The location for your Basic Training is based on training seats that are available, so you will not be able to choose where you go for Basic Training. There are five training installations for Basic Training: Fort Jackson, SC (male and female), Fort Leonard Wood, MO (male and female), Fort Benning, GA (male only), Fort Knox, KY (male only), and Fort Sill, OK (male only)

For your duty station, some jobs MAY come with guaranteed assignment at the time of your enlistment. If your job does not come with a guaranteed assignment, then you will be given the opportunity to select your choices of where you want to be stationed during your job training, utilizing the Assignment Satisfaction Key, a secure on-line personnel database in which you update your assignment preferences directly with the Army Human Resources Command.

What kind of physical shape do I need to be to enlist? For Basic Training?

As with all of the military services, the Army does have initial height and weight standards, which are roughly as follows:

Males: Height: 5'0" to 6'8" Weight: 100 lb to 255 lb

Females: Height: 4'10" to 6'8" Weight: 70 lb to 227 lb

When you contact us for more information, if you are concerned that your physical condition may be a factor, then ask. We have an enlistment standards chart that tells us whether or not you meet the entrance standards for height/weight.

Other than that, the only other physical requirement there is to enlist is that you must be able to pass a medical screening, much like a sports physical or annual checkup.

Prior to Basic Training, you must be able to pass a Physical Fitness Assessment, which are as follows:

Males: 13 push ups in one minute, 17 sit ups in one minute, and a 1 mile run in 8 minutes and 30 seconds

Females: 3 push ups in one minute, 17 sit ups in one minute, and a 1 mile run in 10 minutes and 30 seconds
