THE COST TO RENEW THE BILLS IN COLOMBIA
A big part of the colombian population handles the bills in a wrong way. For example, people write, perforate, stain, wrinkle or fold them excessively, that's why, Colombian Central Bank (BR 1 ) has to spend a lot money to renew the bills. This article shows how much de BR has spent when it renews the bills unnecessarily.
There are many kinds of materials to make bills. For instance, Malaysia adopted the polymer bill technology to increase its quality in circulation because this material reduces the dirt and liquids absorption. Therefore, it reduces the abrasion, it wears away and doesn't permit the loose of the color.
Australia's experts say the production cost of a polymer bill is twice more expensive than the normal paper material bill. For this reason, changing the bills material is way too expensive for Colombia . At the present time, a BR's study says 20% of the destroyed bills to renew is caused by the premature bill damage and not to normal bill deterioration. The bill's annual reposition costs almost 6000 millions of Colombian pesos, this cost is the same as the one government invested to help 18.000 farm families in 42 Valle's municipalities with a food security program.
For this reason, the BR has transmitted some educational radio and TV commercials, since 2003, about how you can give suitable handling to the bills. The government wants to extend the bill's normal cycle of life.
Then, it is our responsibility to take care of the bills. If not, Colombians will continue wasting our money in the reposition of the bills. We should think about this. Have we abused of our bills lately? We could do something else with our money .
