Splashing about in the light of day
Quacking wildly as they go their way.
Helpless ducklings, not knowing
Their fun-filled days are going.
Swimming just beneath the surface
In this slime-filled place.
Destroying others is his game
The old, young, infirm, lame.
The snapper's in his element, be forewarned.
He's hardened by experience, but unlearned
Unpredictable is the way to describe him
Don't expect a logical explanation - it's on a whim.
He's a protected species, a favorite.
Of the left, not the right.
Supporters ignore his contradictory way(s)
Winning's all that matter they say.
Now he swims near the throne,
Lurking beneath the surface poised to attack anyone.
When he emerges from the swamp in light of day
He'll plod along, in his prehistoric way.
If you chop off his head
The body wont notice it should be dead.
And, the head retains the snapping ability
Some say "until it thunders" in Washington city.
The hard shell on his back
Appears to resist most any attack
He draws head and legs under for protection
Waiting the time to attack again.
Pick him up carefully if you dare
His long neck can reach and his beak can snare.
Claws designed for digging or tearing flesh away
He's a destroyer, not a builder to this day.
He's a snapping turtle in Nature's mold
Vicious and mean; but we're never told.
Never mind, the press will say,
We're awaiting results on election day.
Till then and after, is the line,
This democratic snapper will do just fine.
He's against the issues of the hour.
But a past champion for them before they soured.
Three others share this swamp, shallow
Listen to their sounds as they bellow.
Bigger and bolder in their action,
Self preservation likewise is their caution.
The female of the species poised to jump
A black widow-politic, round and plump.
Seasoned by hiding in corners
Strike out and destroy is her rejoinder.
Another creature, a bloated frog
Never to be trusted in this bog.
He swims amongst the lily pads
Having drowned a duckling here it's said.
The other a Plains mocassin squirms
And spews venom as he turns.
Like the tempter of bible lore
Offer's victims free lunch and more.
They wait for the widow, the chosen one,
Poised to claim her seat when its done.
The turtle can stay until that day,
As long as he goes when it's her time to play.
