| "Cold Steel" Acquires Air Assets 17APR02 - Ft. Ross: The 210th took delivery of its first air asset today, receiving an AH-6 "Little Bird" (21001) helicopter at the base helipad. "It's pretty awesome," commented CRT member PV2 Ross, while watching the machine descend. Along with the aircraft, the 210th also received a pilot. Motor Sgt Durden had a bemused look on his face. "It doesn't do us much good if we can't fly it." Commander Merzke welcomed Captain Lance Guarro to Ft. Ross and the 210th. "Cpt. Guarro comes to us from the USArmy's 160th SOAR," Merzke said. "Col. Begines and I were negotiating with their commanding officer over the purchase of one of their 'used' Little Birds, and Guarro was the pilot who took me up for a test ride. We got to talking about USDOC and the 210th, and before I knew it he was inquiring if we had any pilots and about the possibility of a transfer." "I liked Commander Merzke and Colonel Begines right off the bat," Guarro explained. "The more I learned about USDOC's mission and the 210th's role, the more I wanted to be a part of it." CPT Guarro has been assigned to the newly formed Aviation Platoon as Platoon Leader. An 8-year veteran of the USArmy, Lance graduated from Norwich Military Academy in Vermont ('93) and chose the Aviation branch. He was recruited by the 160th shortly after the completion of flight school and has served with them ever since. Most recently CPT Guarro distinguished himself during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Air Medal. Guarro was tight-lipped about the award. "I still can't really talk about it," was all he would say. In related news, Communications Specialist Lance Corporal Singer of Headquarters Platoon has just completed rotary-wing flight school. Warrant Officer Singer will serve as co-pilot. |
