From 1884 to 1922, Sarah L. Winchester, heiress to the
Winchester Rifle fortune,
used some of her $20,000,000 inheritance building
this 160 room Victorian mansion.
Mrs. Winchester was convinced by a medium that building, 24 hours a day,
would appease spirits of those killed by the "Gun that Won the West".
The home had modern heating and sewer systems, three working elevators, 47 fireplaces and gas lighting.
It included such oddities as a window built into the floor, staircases
leading to nowhere,
a chimney that rises four floors to stop 1 1/2 feet from
the ceiling.
Doors open onto blank walls and posts are built upside down.
It holds one of the largest private collections of art glass in the world.
Gardens include animal and mythological statues.
Thirteen California Fan
Palms line the front driveway.
Some claim to see strange phenomenon.
