Orbitando alrededor de Excalbia, la Enterprise recibe una transmisión de Abraham Lincoln que pide subir a bordo e invita a Kirk y a Spock a descender al planeta. Ahí una criatura rocosa le informa que han sido elegidos para un duelo entre el bien y el mal, en el que los "buenos" son representados por Kirk, Spock, Lincoln y Surak, mientras que los "malos" están representados por Zora, Gengis Khan, Kahless y el Coronel Green.
