Respondiendo a un misterioso SOS desde Arret, un planeta considerado muerto, Kirk, McCoy y la dra. Ann Mulhall son teletransportados al subsuelo. Tres alienígenas, Sargon, Henoch y Thalassa, cuyas mentes están depositadas en tres esferas, necesitan de cuerpos prestados para construir tres androides en los cuales se transferirán definitivamente.
Notas:
El autor del script original es John T. Dugan pero, a causa de los cambios aportados, en los créditos sólo se le reconoció la historia y por lo tanto el autor prefirió usar un pseudónimo. Años después, en la edición VHS, en la portada de la caja el pseudónimo fue removido y sustituido por el nombre de Roddenberry. Después de un breve litigio con la Paramount, resuelto fuera de los tribunales (motivado también porque Dugan enfermó de cáncer) la portada fue corregida y Dugan indemnizado.
