Después de una llamada de socorro, Kirk, Spock y McCoy descienden a un planeta donde encuentran a los Kelvanos, alienígenas de la galaxia de Andrómeda venidos a valorar la posibilidad de nuevas conquistas. A causa de la pérdida de su nave se apoderan de la Enterprise después de neutralizar a la tripulación.

El título original hace referencia a un paso de Romeo y Julieta (II 2 43) de William Shakespeare, en el cual Julieta en el balcón dice: "What's in a name? Kirk: No. But we would welcome friends.
