Course Description

Speaking and listening skills are developed at the high-intermediate level.  Listening comprehension, note-taking, pronunciation, and presentation skills are emphasized.


Prerequisites

ENSL 0072 with a ‘C’ (or better grade) or appropriate placement.

Required Texts

o    Noteworthy:  Listening and Notetaking Skills , Lim and Smalzer (NW)
o    Focus on Pronunciation: Principles and Practice for Effective Communication, Lane (FP)
o    An English-only dictionary (Recommended: The Longman Dictionary of American English or The Newbury House Dictionary of American English).
 
Also required

o    Floppy disks to save computer projects

Skills to be Developed
 
By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

o    Communicate effectively by performing tasks such as role plays, group discussions, and/or debates and by making a ten minute formal speech that is well-developed and shows clarity in pronunciation.
o    Improve their pronunciation by demonstrating clarity in using appropriate rhythm, stress and intonation patterns and by identifying and using phonetic symbols to transcribe sounds.
o    Improve their listening comprehension by demonstrating aural comprehension by taking notes on academic lectures.
o    Use computer technologies to aid in pronunciation, oral presentations (Excel, Power Point, and Inspiration) and research.

Assignments/Requirements

  • Listening to academic lectures, and then note-taking, summarizing, and outlining those lectures
  • Taking dictation on academic material
  • Communicative tasks on academic and cultural topics involving the stating/supporting of opinions, contrasting and persuading
  • Pronunciation tasks that focus on stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns
  • 1 Collaborative group presentation
  • 2 individual presentations
  • Frequent Quizzes
  • Final exam

Attendance and make-up work

Students must attend 90% of class sessions in an ESL course.  A student who is absent (excused or unexcused) more than 10% (2 classes ) may be withdrawn from the class by the instructor or may be penalized with a deduction of points from the final grade.  Please refer to the department policy sheet for more information on attendance.

If you know ahead of time that you will miss a class (due to illness or an emergency), email or phone the instructor.  Missed work must be made up PRIOR to the next class meeting.  Contact the instructor or a classmate for any assignments that you have missed.  THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!
