Common Name Amazon Sword
Native Habitat Brazil
Lighting Requirements High (1.5 WPG)
Tempreature Range 78 - 80 F
P.H. Range 7.6 - 7.8
Care Medium
Notes:      This sword is doing really well concidering the low light I have in my tank (About .8 WPG) . I re-arranged the tank the other day and made a round raised area with some rocks around the sword, and when i went to move it, I was shocked at all the roots! It had runners going everywhere, some were half as long as my arm! It has grown a good bit since i purchased it early this month, but there is one slight flaw that I am noticing... on two of the newer leaves, they almost look translucent, I think this is a sign of too little light. Time will tell....

Notes:     Don't laugh, as you have probably figured out already, I'm Cheap... so I got these bulbs at Wall-Mart just to see what they would do... (they were $1.99 for 5 bulbs) There was a money back Guarantee on the package (like anyone would pay for the shipping to send a bulb back) that said  If any bulb fails to sprout within 20 days, they would replace it. well ... its been about 30 days ... and one has sprouted  lol. Its doing pretty good so far, im anxious to see what variety of aponogeton it will turn out to bee (Its looking like an A.Crispus) I'll keep you updated on the "Mystery Aponogeton"

Lighting Requirements Medium
Tempreature Range 15 - 28 C

Notes:      My wife picked this one up for me at the LFS, it is really cool, about 2 weeks after i got it, it started shooting off little blooms. The blooms were on short runners from the main stalk, and had a very small white flower. Nothing very big or flashy, but it was cool to have something bloom in the tank... next time I'll have the batteries charged up on my camera ;-)

P.H. Range Neutral - Basic

Notes:      I aquired this paticular plant from my catfish pond in the pasture. this stuff grows out there like you wouldn't believe, and they sell it at the pet store for $1.50 a bundle hehehe.... One thing you need to be sure to do is wash anything that you get from the wild VERY VERY GOOD before you put it in your tank! I have heard of people using a 1:20 Bleach solution to wash plants and rocks, but I was afraid that I would kill the plant, so I just washed them in tap water. I soaked them for about 5 minutes and then stirred up the water, when you do this, you will understand why you have to wash things....  I found all kinds of little critters in that stuff... everything from Dragonfly larvae (these can kill your entire fish population from what i hear) to snails.
This plant is doing Extremely well, almost too good... I have to trim and throw away clippings almost every week. The only reason it is still in my tank is that I havent gotten enough other plants to make up for the space that this stuff is occupying. I really don't like its appearance all that well, but it is searving its purpous for now.
The main reasons i got this plant were as follows... It is a really fast grower and when your setting up a new planted tank with DIY CO you need fast growers to stop all the algae blooms that pop up....and second ..... It was free   ;-)

Care Easy
Notes:      Java ferns should not be planted in the gravel (like this one is) since this picture was taken, I have moved my Java ferns to a piece of drift wood and tied them to it with a length of fishing line. I have had these in my tank for about a month and a half... I wasnt sure what they were exactly until they started growing little plants on the bottom sides of their leaves. If you look closely at the top right leaf in the picture, you can see one of the baby plants poking out from behind the main leaf. In general, the ferns are doing very well, even though I didn't plant them as they are supposed to be planted.

Notes:      I got this plant from my pond too (see Hornwort above for more information on getting plants from the wild). I really like this plant, but I cant seem to find it on the Internet anywhere. When it is growing really good, the top part of the plant is a red color, and this really brightens up the tank. It grows really fast (almost as fast as the hornwort) and is easy to multiply, just cut it and replant it.
