Book Summary

From the Projects to Princeton

The author was inspired to write this manuscript while living in South Florida.  He had worked in several capacities, including a teacher at a private school, a learning manager for a major corporation, an intensive English instructor at several language schools, and a teacher and adviser at a small career college.  What the author discovered was that life was not fair, of course, and that most people did not know this!  People, including the author himself, found themselves in situations that they had unknowingly created and could not understand.  When the author found himself in similar situations as previously described, he turned to his family, and, the values, which had been instilled in him from childhood by his family, that enabled him to persevere, believe in himself, and challenge and conquer those obstacles!  His family had changed, though his mother, Marietta, and his older sister, Edna, were still there for him when times got rough!

The book traces his development, describing his formative years in White Plains, New York and the Winbrook Housing Development, a.k.a. The Projects, and the joys of growing up under the tutelage of his father, his mother, his two sisters, and his brother.  The family unit is highlighted, as well as the familys ability to function in the face of tragedy and opposition to the members of the family.  In fact, the book is more about Johns family rather than about John himself!

John continues to have success due to his firm foundation and unconditional, yet firm, support provided by his family.  Several family values are inculcated into the episodes of the Cookbook, which is the alternate title of the manuscript, and the manner in which they provide sustenance to the members of the family in difficult times.  John himself encounters a barrage of obstacles and challenges in his work and in South Florida society as well as its various institutions of law and enforcement, especially the police and the court system!  To his surprise, John encounters these obstacles with the vigor and knowledge given him by his family as well as with some newly realized practices that he learns about while trying to remain true to himself and his family.

The book is truly a real life story of a young boy as he grows up in many unique situations.  It shows how he meets these situations, adapts and adjusts to them, and finally makes them his own, if you will!  It is fun reading and full of drama, romance, and intrigue!  Get it soon and enrich your life!
