JOHN DAY BASSFEST
2004
Jim put together some rules for a friendly little tournament. We would only count the bass 12 and over, the person with the most counters at the end of the trip won.  Another category that you had to have, of course, was the biggest bass.  Being the Bass Master, Jim had some great how to information for us to rig our lines for bass.  He also laid out an impressive buffet of tackle goodies for us to use.  And if that wasnt enough, he treated us all to official BassFest logo gear hats.
The Put-In at Clarno
BassFest 2004 was born! That first year we invited eight guys to go, and ended up with six on the day we drove out of town on our way to the river.  The first crew ended up being; Chris Werner, Robert Van Egmond, Keith Pagel, Herb Kirchem, Jim Thum, Paul Kauffman.  The trip was a great hit with lots of fun memories, and new friendships.  The experiment was a success; the Northwest fishermen were hooked on bass fishing!  It was unanimous that the trip should become an annual event, and plans were soon made to return to the John Day in 2005.

Herb Kirchem won the tournament with 17 counters, and Paul Kauffman had the catch of the day with 17 smallie on the last day.
Sorry Rhino, this is BASSfest NOT SQUAWFISHfest!
