| The part I've been waiting for! Now I get to make fun of my mom! I mean, I get to tell you about my mom. Yeah, that's it. . . Faye Sutton Thomas (Mom) My grandma loved the name "Faye" (which is related to "fey" or "fairy"). There was a group of cousins of my mom who all had names rhyming with the "ay" sound. I guess it's a southern thing. Although she was born in Billings, Montana, Mom comes from a Southern family who are originally from Tennessee and North Carolina. So, that's the kind of food my Mom learned to cook. It made for some good eatin' when my sister and I were growing up. Of course, now Mom's "trying to be careful" which means that she only uses two pats of butter on her bread and only half of the regular amount of gravy. Mom grew up in Billings and went to Billings High School where she was in the Pep Squad. She still has her sweater with her letter on it - Stacy and I used to borrow it whenever we had "50's Days" at school. After high school, mom worked in the registrar's office at the University of Oregon while she attended school at Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon. After leaving college, she moved to Mill Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked at an insurance office in the City, where her mother was working. After leaving the insurance office, Mom went to work for a publishing company (publishers of Agricultural West and "Animal Health Something") in Sausalito. The office was pretty tiny; Mom was "the circulation department". Mom was introduced to Dad by "Rick the UPS Driver", who was a friend of my dad's from high school in Salinas. They dated for awhile when my Dad was still in the Navy, and shortly after he got out, Dad proposed to Mom. When I was young, Mom was mainly a stay-at-home Mom. She took Stacy and I out after school to buy school supplies and sometimes a nice little treat (like a comic book or a trip to the library) and also drove me to piano lessons and soccer practice. She was pretty involved in our school and extra-curricular activities (such as volunteering to be a chaperone on field trips) but wasn't one of those annoying in-your-face "Ooh isn't my kid so great you should really try these muffins I made them with honey instead of sugar but they taste just as good Oh don't touch that you could get hurt Sure I'll pick the kids up in the station wagon Who's turn is it for the school car pool" soccer-mom types. My mom is more of a quiet, behind-the-scenes type. That works out pretty well because my dad usually ends up in the limelight (mainly due to his quirky use of the phrase "rain locker" instead of "shower"). Later on, Mom took some part-time jobs and worked as an office manager for a bank, a podiatrist office, at a judge's office, a school district, a tax man, and now as the secretary for a condominium association (which she doesn't live in) and for a pre-school. Mom's also been the secretary for her Square Dance Club in Salt Lake City and down here in the L.A. Area. People really like her humorous writing style although some dorks don't get it and think that "The minutes are no place for funny business." Come on, folks. It's square dancing, for Pete's sake. Nobody's going to get hurt. Mom's main hobbies are Square Dancing with my Dad (again, "the horror". . . ) and checking up on how I'm progressing with our family genealogy research. She also loves interior decorating and decorating the house for Christmas, as long as I am the one who actually thinks of the ideas and then executes the decorating. I made the mistake of taking some art classes in High School which somehow has translated into my Mom's mind as "Marty knows how to do that stuff". I'm not even sure what that means. Thanks for everything, Mom and Dad. Jody's really looking forward to being part of the family so Mom can sigh at her and Dad can make fun of her for not liking chocolate.
