Employed as post-doctoral researcher at the Pharmazeutisches  Institut of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with Professor Christa E Müller

June 22nd, 2001:

Awarded the degree of PhD with ”summa cum laude” (”excellent”)

April 1998 to June 2001:

Employed as research assistant at the Institut für Pharmazie - Zentrum für Pharmaforschung of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München with Professor Franz Bracher

January to March 1998:

Practical training in missionary pharmacy with the Christian Light Foundation in Quezon City (Philippines)

Dec. 11th, 1997:

Graduation as a pharmacist with the third state examination.

June 1997 to November 1997:

Six months of practical training in pharmaceutical retail at the  “Eschenapotheke” in Taufkirchen

December 1996 to May 1997:

Six months of practical training in pharmaceutical research at John Moores University in Liverpool/GB

1992-1996:

Pursued course of pharmacy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

In addition to the compulsory curriculum I had three trainings as an assistant researcher at Munich University (heterocyclic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis and phytochemistry) of one month each

1991/1992:

As an alternative to military service I undertook community and social service (Zivildienst) at the Evangelische Bahnhofsmission München (”train station mission”)

I received parts of my school education in Madrid/Spain (one year) and Guayaquil/Ecuador (three years)

Professional affiliation: As a registered pharmacist (approbierter Apotheker) I am member of the Apothekerkammer Nordrhein

Maritial status: Married to Anja Burbiel: 2 children

Language skills:  Fluent in German and English, and proficient in Spanish

Computational skills: Highly competent, both in Windows 3.x/95/NT/XP and UNIX/Linux

 

Research achievements:

Synthesis of over 80 new 2-azabicyclodecanes and other azasteroid derivatives as novel anti-fungals, some of which show greater in vitro activity than standard anti-fungal compounds (PhD thesis, for details go here)

Gram scale synthesis of more than 10 adenosine receptor antagonists, including development of improved pathways for multi-step heterocyclic syntheses (for examples go here)

Synthesis of over 30 new 2-substituted adenosine derivatives as adenosine A2A receptor agonists

Synthesis of over 90 new heterocyclic compounds as adenosine A2A receptor antagonists, including the development of new synthetic procedures

         

Further responsibilities:

Implementation of new synthetic methods (e.g. microwave assisted synthesis)

Responsible for all scales and microwave systems of the institute

Teaching responsibilities in qualitative and quantitative pharmaceutical analytics (3 years) and in quantitative inorganic analytics (5 years) for undergraduates

Teaching responsibilities in advanced organic synthesis for graduate and PhD students (4 years)

Involved in examinations at various levels (both written and oral)

Management of scientific recruiting for Professor Müller´s group
