Inspite of the recent breakout in tribal warfare, and fear of safety in the Southern Highlands, interested travellers and sightseeing visitors are encouraged to travel to other areas in the province. Many other places are calm and normal, you can witness it if a span of time is taken out with locals in the villages. Communicating with a visitor has been a problem in the early days, but has changed dramatically today. Even today, many Southern Highlanders cannot read and write in English, the most widely spoken language is the "Pidgin English" or Tokpisin in public areas like comercial spots, markets, and in public motor vehicles. Outside these common places, native languages are used. At points where visitors are met, apparently the most comfortable language spoken thrown at is tokpisin, even small kids at the age of 6-7 can manage to respond to queries.
