Safety Procedures & Guidelines

Hunters must read the following documentation prior to hunting

Article : Overview of Black Bears

Safety Harness
Everyone will be shown how to use their safety harness prior to using a ladder stand. The safety harness must be worn to use Castle Creek Outfitters' stands.

Weapon Safety
A weapon is NEVER to contain ammunition when climbing up or down from a stand. Weapons are to be raised and lowered with a rope once hunter is secured in stand.

Gun Safe
The safety on your weapon should only be off when you have selected your target and are ready to fire.

What to expect
Go to the Castle Creek Guide Service page and read the "What to Expect" link "Information"

Shot placement
Do not force shots. Shot placement is key in bear hunting. Not only does the animal deserve a clean shot, but it should not have to suffer from a high risk shot. No one likes a wounded bear. Go to the Castle Creek Guide Service page and read the "Shot Placement" link " Bear Anatomy"

Give the bear time
Once you have shot your bear - give it ample time to expire. I suggest at least 30 minutes. Stay alert as to its whereabouts for when you are ready to collect your bear.

Tracking bears
No one but the lead tracker is to have amunition chambered.

Lost & disorientated
Be sure to carry a cell phone or radio with you or stay put until some one comes to get you. One should carry a whistle to help signal your position. Mark your trail if you feel the need with tape or glow thumb tacks. It is also helpful to carry a compass.

Emergency
In the event of an emergency - contact Castle Creek Outfitters, the local Conservation Officer, or your hunting party. Castle Creek Outfitters will have your emergency contact information on hand (Phone numbers, health conditions, etc...). John Hedstrom is certified in First Aid, CPR and carries a first aid kit in his vehicle.

Flashlight & Knife
Carry a flashlight and a knife. Be sure your light is charged or has fresh batteries.
