York City Landmarks
Municipal
Building 1 Centre St. (1907-14)
This limestone building straddles
Chambers Street, and has magnificent Corinthian columns, flanking a central
triumphant arch. It rises 25 stories to a templed cupola, topped by the
gold statute Civic Fame, designed by Adolph Weinman. It houses city
administrative offices and a large subway station. The park in the back provides
a magnificent view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River.
Snook Building
Broadway and Reade St.(1871-72)
The
Snook Building is located diagonally across from my building.
It is a classic example of the
French Second Empire style, with an impressive mansard roof, featuring lacy iron
cresting. The arched windows are beautiful.
Surrogates
Building 31Chambers St. (1907)

This was formerly the Hall of
Records. Built of Maine granite, the roof is classic French Second Empire design.
It has a profusion of sculptural detail, depicting New York City's history. It also combines Beaux
Arts design elements. It is an amazing building, with a magnificent sienna marble foyer.
