NEWS from WPGH: March, 2003: While WNPA steps up their marketing for their competing 10 PM newscast, WPGH dumbs theirs down. A new promotion for "The FOX53 Ten O'Clock News" admits that they (and viewers) don't care about who has more reporters, more local reports, more capabilities... what we apparently care about is a "Fair, objective" newscast with "none of the spin". Meanwhile, WNPA stepped up to the plate with a series of slick, clean promos: "Don't be outFOXed," and "Stay up to date, not up too late." Who will win the 10:00 ratings period, as WPGH's NewsCentral continues to experience a drop in audience? We'll stay tuned... Apr/May 2003: It was announced that Sinclair's Hunt Valley, MD-based News Central program will come to WPGH very soon. In preperations for the *ahem* trash tv *cough* update, no replacement will be made for Jay Harris. Also, the entire "SkyScan" weather team was let go: Pat Bridges, (now working a Lancome counter at a local Kaufmann's) and Chief Meteorologist Matt Morano. (Last day is in June, already being replaced by centalcasted-weather.) A total of 10 employees were let go; however, Kym Gable (ney Kobasko of WTOV- fame), Katie Sesne (weekend anchor/reporter) and Andy Briggs were not layes off. The idea behind News Central was to bring a "quality (HA!) newscast to markets or stations that can't afford their own operation. Now even my mother, who judges news by what time the weather is on, tunes away from 53. As she says, "I don't like that lady." Was to go, mom. UPN19 All the way! January, 2003: WPGH-TV has dropped NewsSource for the Sinclair Stations Group Custom. Graphics were updated a little, and new opens introduced. Albeit a nice change, but still cheap. And still black-and-gold themed. Breaking News: Nov. 04 2002: WPGH anchor Jay Harris is leaving to join ESPN in Connecticut. (How he got that job, God knows...) Reporter Kym Gable and Katie Sense will join Sheila Hyland until a permanant replacement is found.
