Wie kommt man nach Mainz?

For Immediate Release

Sure, I have been to Germany before. I love that country. So neat, so well-ordered. I spent most of my time in Germany trying to convince my travel buddy, Mike Chidsey, that Germany is a great place. He served an LDS mission in Austria and was poisoned by Austrian-supremecy propaganda.

We landed in Frankfurt, via Detroit and Amsterdam, and I immediately felt that we should discover the Germany that lies beyond the Frankfurt International Airport.

The plan was to take a boat trip down the Rhine river from Mainz to Cologne. Neither of us had really slept in the previous 72 hours, so we spent way too much time riding the wrong trains. After about two hours and countless trains, we arrived in Mainz only to realize we could have walked the distance in about the same time. Due to poor planning we missed the boat to Cologne.

We stared at the Rhine through droopy eyes for a few minutes before admitting defeat and hopping a train for Paris. Miraculously, we got on the right train.

As we sped through the Benelux countries on an Inter City Express, we put our feet up on the patent leather seats of the First Class compartment and bid farewell to the Fatherland.

(Dramatic Pause)

But we would return!

Yeah verily, our return flight was also from the Frankfurt airport!

Although we only spent one night in Germany, and that night was in Frankfurt, we had a wonderful time. The hostel was clean and the girl at the front desk was quite fetching. We had some extra Euros, so we ate a fancy, German meal and watched Star Wars. After the movie we met some of our roommates at the hostel. One was an alchohol-crazed Irishman named Patty (I kid you not). He stumbled into the room with two half finished bottles of Guiness at five in the morning spreading four-leaf clovers of explitives (for the Irish they were just filler words). Long live stereotypes! Chidsey took back at least five bad things he said about Germany.

Sorry there are no Frankfurt pictures, but my memory card was full and Frankfurt is not the most beautiful city.
