Chapter 4
The next day
Theresa and I were sitting at the water fountain talking. It was a beautiful day
outside but the only drawback was that lessons were going to start later at
noon. It was only 10:30 right now. I wasn’t ready to tell Theresa what
happened with Tony and I last night, but she had a feeling that something
happened to me.
“Okay, for the past hour
you’ve been smiling and sighing really loudly. What’s wrong with
you?” she asked as she sat closer to me. I sighed. “Nothing’s
wrong. Actually, everything’s all right.” I sighed again.
“Did you watch too many WL
episodes last night?”
“You can never watch too many WL
episodes…”
“Did you go hide under
Tony’s office window again?”
“No…”
“Then what DID you do last
night?”
I had a stupid
grin growing on my face and sighed out loud. Really loud.
“I had an amazing
night…” (Sigh)
“Hmm, really? Well let’s
see—Oh! Don’t tell me…he came over to your
place?”
I looked at
her and gave her a sly smile.
“Oh my God he did, didn’t
he? What happened? You HAVE to tell me!”
“Right now? What if somebody
hears me?”
“Okay fine. Let’s
see…”
As she made
suggestions of places to go and times to meet, I gazed off into the distance and
saw Tony standing in front of the library building. He was staring straight at
me and he motioned for me to come over. I looked around behind me and saw nobody
else looking in the same direction I was. He disappeared into the building and
so I stood up.
“Hey look. Why don’t I just
meet you in first period and I’ll tell you then, okay? I gotta…be
somewhere right now.”
“Umm…okay then.
Bye!”
I casually
walked to the main building doors and went inside. This time nobody was in the
hallway. I opened the library door and peeked inside. There was a librarian
sitting at a computer with her back to me. I looked around and saw Tony’s
head poking out from behind one of the bookshelves that were all the way in the
back corner of the room. I looked around to make sure it was clear and walked
over to him.
“Hello, luv,” he said as he
held my right hand and then gave me a hug. “Hi Tony. Nice to see you too!
You wanted to see me about something?”
“Yes I did. I couldn’t find
any other way to contact you without coming over to your flat since your phone
is still out of service. And when I saw you sitting at the fountain, I
didn’t want to just come over and start talking out there. So anyways,
about last night—“
“It was
great.”
“Yes, it was great,” he
said, still holding my hand and smiling. “Can I come over to see you again
tonight?”
“Yeah, sure! Just knock and
I’ll let you in. One thing though. What if people start wondering about
us, you know? Because for the past 2 or 3 days, people have been seeing us
talking to each other a lot.”
“So if I happen to run into
anybody on the way to your place, I’ll just say that we’re not quite
finished with your paperwork from your schools in the States and I had to come
over to inform you of that since you still don’t have a
phone.”
We both smiled
at the thought of his plan.
“That’s
perfect!”
There was the
sound of voices and the library door closing. I quickly turned to face the
bookshelf and grabbed any book. Hopefully nobody will come back here and see us
together!
“Hmm, what do you think of this
book?” I innocently asked Tony. He put a finger on his mouth and said
“Well I don’t know, Jennifer. “The Joy of Sex” is not
exactly something that I would recommend for a student!”
I quickly
stuffed the book back up on the shelf and frantically searched for another. He
then leaned over closer to my ear and whispered, “Of course, you
don’t have to listen to me…” I giggled a little and he
quickly hushed me. Oh man this was going to be fun! I loved keeping secrets and
this one is definitely one that nobody is going to know about. Hold on now. What
about Theresa? I can’t tell her everything that’s going on, or what
will happen. That’s it, I’ll just tell her about last night and
that’s it.
Tony and I
said our good-byes with carefully timed hugs and kisses on the cheeks. I went to
first period, which was my science class. Theresa and I sat in the very back of
the room and talked until class started, which was in about 2 minutes.
“Okay, you can start telling me
what happened to you last night!” she said as she moved her books aside
and crossed her arms on the desk.
“Actually, if I tell you now,
it’ll ruin the ending.”
“How?”
“Because you’re gonna want
to hear more of what happened and by then class would have already started and
I’m not going to get in trouble for talking in class.”
“Well just tell me now anyways. I
want to know!”
“Fine. It was around 8
o’clock and I was watching tv and To—Hold on now. I’m gonna
have to call him something else. Whenever I say ‘Sam,’ I’m
talking about ‘you-know-who,’ okay?”
All she did
was nod and waited for me to continue.
“Okay. So SAM came over at 8 and
we talked for a whole hour to learn more about each other. So at around
9:15—“
I was
interrupted by a woman’s voice. Dang it, class just started.
“Tell me more!” Theresa
whispered. “Not now!” I whispered back. “Fine. Write a
note.”
I took out a
sheet and a pen. I looked up at the teacher and saw that we were about to take
notes from the overhead projector. Perfect! In high school I always had this
innocence about me and nobody would ever suspect me of doing anything wrong. So
whenever I would write a note to somebody during class, I would look up at the
board every once in a while to make it look like I was paying attention.
Anyways, I started writing Theresa this note.
“You better take these notes!
I’m gonna copy them later!” I whispered. “Okay,” she
said back to me.
I wrote about
how Tony, er, SAM, and I talked about having a secret relationship. That’s
all I wrote down and I gave her the note. I could see her smiling and then she
let out a soft giggle. I frantically began to copy down the notes. The teacher
turned around and looked at us.
“I’m sorry,” Theresa
apologized. The teacher blinked and then went back to her lecture. Theresa gave
me this weird look and then gave me back the note. I began writing more about
what happened the night before without checking whether the teacher was looking
or not. All of a sudden, Theresa nudged me with her elbow and I looked up at the
board. It turns out that the teacher was standing right beside Theresa!
“Excuse me. Are you writing notes
back here?” she asked.
“Um…” was all that
came out of my mouth. I looked at Theresa and we both looked up at the teacher.
“Give me the note,” she
demanded and I slowly took out the note and gave it to her. She stood there and
read the note to herself, then walked over to the trash bin and threw it away.
“Sorry, class.
Anyways…”
Theresa and I looked at each
other with relief and went to work on the notes for class.
