1.  Gain background information on the Harlem Renaissance by reading through the websites below and utilizing books in our school library.  Take reading notes using the Cornell Notetaking Method.

2.  After gaining general knowledge on the Harlem Renaissance you will be placed in a team and assigned one of the following topics: 

Music of the Harlem Renaissance
Artists of the Harlem Renaissance
Entertainers of the Harlem Renaissance

Writers of the Harlem Renaissance
Activists of the Harlem Renaissance

The above links will take you to resources to use in doing your research.  Your groups research should focus on the people of the Harlem Renaissance, their work, and the impact it had on American life in relation to the following themes of the Harlem Renaissance:

Harlem life and culture
Establishing an identity as African Americans
Feelings of anger and frustration about white America

3.  After thoroughly researching your topic your group will use your knowledge to create a presentation that will teach the class about your groups topic.  It is important that your presentation be well-developed, historically accurate, and informative. 

4.  As a group you will decide how to best to portray your research to your classmates.  Presentations should include the following:

General Information on (Music, Entertainers, Artists, Writers, Activits)
Key Figures
Visual Examples and Explanations of their Work (music, artwork, pictures, movie clips, poems, articles, etc...)
Social, Political, Economic Problems faced by African Americans
Portrayal of Harlem Renaissance Themes in Work
Impact on America

5.  Complete your research and presentation by assigned date.  During other groups presentations take lecture notes using the
Cornell Notetaking Method.

6. Using the information gained from group presentations respond to the following essay prompt.

What impact do you think the Harlem Renaissance had on the United States? 

In responding to the writing prompt keep in the mind the following:

The effect that achievement has on people
The value of assertive behavior
The contributions that diverse peoples can make to a society
The political, economic, and social pressures that affect people
The themes of the Harlem Renaissance and specific examples
