The one place where handshakes are almost univerally expected is in business greetings. In business meetings it is common to combine the informal greeting, "Hi. Nice to meet you," with a formal handshake. Example:
"Hello. It's good to meet you."
"It's good to meet you, too."
The informal responses "Likewise," and "You, too," should be avoided in this instance, but would be perfectly acceptable when meeting a potential friend or date. The above greeting can also be used to say goodbye to someone you just met.
"It was good meeting you."
"It was good meeting you, too."
