From "Educational Philosophy": "The foundation of my instructional approach is built on: instructional variety, student engagement, and the incorporation of multiple intelligences."

Lectures. A necessary and important part of every Social Studies class. I create my lectures in order to reach as many multiple intelligences as possible and use Power Point presentations, pictures, music, short video clips, and student movement. Also, lectures are limited to short periods and incorporated with other class activities.

Simulations. I look for student involvement in as many different ways as possible. Simulations and engagement activities enhance learning and help overall retention. In the picture to the left, students are involved in an immigration simulation in which a group of students plays the parts of immigrants coming into the U.S., while the rest of the class are broken into small group "immigration boards" and decide who gets in.

Class debates. I seek student interaction in many different ways: student partners, think-pair-share, class discussions, small group discussions, and class debates. Student interaction brings the social interaction and application of concepts that are integral to a good education. In the picture to the left, students take turns debating the pros and cons of AIDS intervention in Africa.

Group work. An important thread in the tapestry of education. Students can thrive when given the opportunity to teach and be taught by each other. Learning how to teach is learning how to learn.

Direct contact with students. My goal is the maximization of direct contact with students. This is true during all phases and class activities because positive human interaction always enhances student learning.
