Taketori Monogatari A.K.A "Kaguya"

Japanese Movie: "Princess from the Moon" (1987)

(AP, ?excellent GTS/CB scene?) Kon Ichikawa. (Kaya: Miho Nakano). Toshiro Mifune plays a 9th century bamboo cutter who comes across a curious glass capsule, housing a tiny baby girl. Once released, the infant instantly becomes a 5-year-old; the astonished Mifune, whose own child has recently died, decides to adopt the girl. It isn't very long before the child Kaya becomes a beautiful adult, the Princess Kaguya (Yasuko Sawaguchi, b. 1965). The girl is constantly courted by eligible bachelors. The crystal begins to emit a strange sound, alerting the girl that she must return to the Moon, whence she came and where she will reign as princess. Not the same as the original legend, in which the girl was a fairy from the moon and was finally taken back, the film ended with the girl taken back home by a spaceship.

two elderly couples go on a mysterious trip by van into a swamp, where they discover the fountain of youth in the roots of an old tree. The African-American couple becomes younger, and so does the white husband, who refuses to give any to his nagging, elderly wife. Angry, she poisons the root mixture, and her husband and the other couple age quickly to their deaths. The wife takes the remainder of the potion, and morphs very convincingly into a young woman. She is happy, until their violent pet dog eats her and regresses into a puppy. Great morph from old to young, and fantastic old age makeup for the wife make this a very enjoyable episode.

Clyde is a fugitive who holes up in a house occupied by an elderly woman. One night he finds an attractive woman upstairs, but he discovers it's the same woman. She tells him that a long time ago her spouse caught her having an affair and put a curse on the house. She must stay up stairs if she wants to be young forever. The same thing will happen to the man if he comes upstairs. The cops arrive and he goes upstairs to change his image but he finds himself getting weak and the woman turns back into a helpless infant unable to do anything but crawl. (Done in cuts)

The elderly Simon Drudd was a chemist trying to create a “youth serum”. Using all sources, from the legendary formulas of the ancients to the most modern medical findings, Drudd, and his assistant Bentley, struggled onward, despite the growing ridicule from colleagues and the public. One day, Drudd cried out in triumph that he finally had the correct chemical formula. Drudd ordered Bentley, at gunpoint, into the freezer. Drudd then revealed that he always intended to use the formula only on himself for his own selfish purposes; planning to take the serum every twenty years, he planned to become immortal. Drudd drank the serum, becoming younger and younger. From old man, to young man, to teenager, to boy, to infant, Drudd continued getting younger. The police arrived and freed Bentley from the freezer; going into the lab, they found an empty pile of clothes, the only thing remaining of Simon Drudd.

Comment: Speculation - Drudd’s “youth serum” may have been an unstable variant of the immortality elixir used by the evil alchemist Diablo, first mentioned in Fantastic Four # 30.

It is a graphic novel about a forty-something businessman with a wife and two teen aged children who, in response to the pressures of his life, spontaneously turns himself into a two-year-old. The darkly humorous book tells of the man-baby's misadventures, including a visit to a convention of regressed adults [!] and an encounter with the man's sister-in-law, who has her own ways of making herself shrink...

One online bookseller is listing this title in their list of the fifty top titles for July 1998! Perhaps the book is still in print.

Just an addendum to information you already list:

The cartoon book 'Tantrum' by Jules Feiffer was originally published in August 1979 by the Alfred A. Knopf Co. The cover on the original hard-cover is slightly different from the one you include, showing a screaming baby-size Leo (in his yellow jammies) running past the title letters.

Of lesser note, Feiffer did a dry-run of 'Tantrum' in his Sunday newspaper panel over a 6 week period in September and October 1978. The story centered entirely on what is the first and last chapters of the book. Most of the same jokes are repeated in the book, although in the newspaper version, Leo does get piggyback rides from his wife and teen son. The strip was most notably carried in New York's 'Village Voice,' but was distributed to other newspapers by the now defunct Publishers-Hall Syndicate.

An aviatrix emerges from the jungle looking as young as she was when her plane went down many years before. Unscrupulous hunters discover that this is due to a secret Fountain of Youth. Tarzan tries to keep the hunters from finding the hidden valley setting of the fountain. The flyer ages as the effects of the fountain wear off. Cheetah drinks the water.

Lost race lives where the fountain of youth is located. They keep it a secret from strangers. A female flyer crashes there and is accepted into the tribe. 30 years later she is forced to return to England to testify in a murder case which Tarzan learned about. On the return trip (off screen) she returns to her normal age. When she returns married to the murder suspect, she is an old woman. Tarzan returns them to the tribe under the condition that no one else will ever come there. Both are returned to youth (off screen). Bad guys are killed before they can reach the fountain. Cheeta the chimp drinks a sample of the water at the end and is turned into a baby. (age stasis, old aged, ARed)

Little girl wanders into poor but happy neighborhood. The girl is shy at first, but Tatiana beckons her into joining them. The girl's mother bursts in and yells at her. That night Tatiana takes her back to the neighborhood. Everyone is in colorful costumes now, the place is brightly lit, and the people are all singing and dancing wildly. The girl's parents have followed and are soon yelling. Tatiana comes up to Mom and peels off the star, revealing a smile on Mom's face instead of the anger she had just seconds earlier. At the end, they all hold hands and the mother is transformed into a little girl too. This seems to be the actual theme, that adults ought to become kids again in order to think like them and have fun with them. Tatiana's own image is sort of that of a kid who never really grew up (her earlier "adult" albums notwithstanding). (AR)

A 30-page short story. The man "Sara Mahiro" (?) is the author. It was the girl version of Tom Hanks' "Big". When the 12-year-old girl got up in the morning, her body had become adult. She had the figure of a 15 year old and her hair had grown.

The Thief Lord

After their parents die, Prosper and Bo run away from their aunt and uncle (who, of course, want to adopt only the younger, cuter Bo, and send Prosper off to boarding school), making their way all the way to the city of Venice, Italy, which they had heard much of in the stories told by their late mother. There, they are taken into a gang of street kids who are under the guidance of the mysterious Scipio, also known as the Thief Lord. Prosper and Bo feel safe until they realize that their aunt and uncle have not only tracked them to Venice, but have also hired a private detective to track them down with the aim of recovering Bo. From there the adventure takes off, as the children dodge the detective while at the same time work to secure a mysterious object for an equally mysterious "Conte."

Three pharmacists decide to help an old lady by inventing a Fountain of Youth serum. They succeed and turn her into a young woman. They then turn her husband into an infant.

For those unfamiliar with the film, the Stooges play druggists who invent a youth elixir to save their business from being evicted by old and nasty landlord Amos Flint. They try the elixir on the landlord's wife (whom he's kicked out of their home for not being beautiful any more). The formula turns her into a curvaceous blonde. Then they trade a dose of the elixir to Amos in trade for the deed to the building housing their drug store. The result is AR that concludes with the landlord in baggy clothes crying like a baby.

A few years ago, a Three Stooges fan group reported that an extra scene was shot for this comedy short, but was deleted so the film could go out at 18 minutes. In this scene, the rejuvenated landlord is played by an actual baby fitted with a great mustache (in the earlier scene, they used a midget). The wife orders Shemp to feed the baby, but Shemp's efforts to get the baby to take the nipple on a baby bottle only results in Shemp getting his thumb bit.

Jaga is an old man, and will soon pass on, before he does so, he gives his crew, which includes the young prince Lion-o, the weapons and powers they will need upon touching down on third earth. He also gives Prince Lion-o the ancient sword of Omens. The thundercats are placed in cryogenic storage by Jaga, and years pass, finally, the ship lands on thundera, but Jaga has died. Alone, the thundercat crew, now with lion-o a grown man, and their leader, must face the perils that third earth brings, beggining with the evil Slyth and his mutants, ancient enemies of the thundercats, who have pursued the cub heroes to this world for a showdown.

Mumm-Ra learns about the Treasure of Thundera and the Sword of Plundarr (Jaga had beaten Ratilla, who owned the Sword, and then buried the sword deep underground), and he and Ma-Mutt "travel back in time and space" to explore the debris of Thundera and look for the sword, which causes the planet to reform. The Thundercats find out about this and must make the journey to New Thundera to stop Mumm-Ra. Lynx-O and the Thunderkittens are left at the tower while the other Thundercats at the Lair are preparing the Feliner for the trip to New Thundera. Vultureman notices that the tower is only guarded by 3 Thundercats and goes to Sky Tomb and tells Luna. Luna then sends Red Eye and Tug Mug to attack the Tower, and they capture Lynx-O and the Thunderkittens.

Lion-O and the other Thundercats arrive and save Lynx-o and the Thunderkittens from Red Eye and Tug Mug. The Thundercats learn more about New Thundera, especially the dangerous places affected by the moons of Plundarr where the Lunataks come from. The Thundercats must develop special equipment and clothing to counter those dangers. Also, they learn that all the snarfs have been turned into slaves and Snarf and Snarfer want to rescue them no matter what the cost. Vultureman learns of the Thundercats plan, so he abandons the other Mutants and takes the Rat-Star. But Slithe has snuck aboard. Right after the Feliner takes off, the Rat-star ambushes them and it seems all over for the Thundercats aboard the Feliner. Lion-O uses the sword to free everyone and along with Ben-Gali and Wilykit on the HoverCat, go after the Ratstar and it crashes on Hook Mt. The Thundercats leave Third Earth's atmosphere and Lynx-O tells him that Mumm-Ra has already located the Sword of Plundarr.

Mumm-Ra retrieves the Sword of Plundarr and the Thundercats arrive on New Thundera. While the Thundercats want to get the Sword and treasure, Snarf and Snarfer want to free their fellow snarfs. While the Thundercats sleep, Snarf and Snarfer sneak away, but are discovered and captured by Mumm-Ra. He disguises himself as Snarfer and he leads the Thundercats to where the treasure is located, but it can only be freed by the Sword of Omens. Once the treasure is freed, Mumm-Ra reveals himself and defeats the Thundercats with the Sword of Plundarr. Now Mumm-Ra possesses the Sword of Plundarr and the Treasure of Thundera.

Mumm-Ra tries to get away but the Sword of Omens breaks open the casket dropping the treasure all over the planet, and Snarf, Snarfer, and one other snarf escape. Mumm-Ra gives a false Book of Omens to Ma-Mutt, Slithe and Vultureman, who have arrived on New Thundera in the Rat-star, for safe keeping so that he can decipher the real Book of Omens. The Thundercats go after them through the Caverns of Cold. They head toward the Canyons of Youth, but due to the effects of the canyon, Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, Snarf, and Snarfer are changed into Thundercubs. Lion-O must use the sword to give the Thundercubs Thundercat understanding. Meanwhile on Third Earth, Jackalman, Monkian, and the Lunataks attack Cats Lair and capture Ben-Gali and Wilykit. Lion-O learns that the Thundercats back on Third Earth are being held prisoner in Sky Tomb, so he decides to send the Thundercubs to Third Earth to rescue them while he tries to get the Book of Omens from Mumm-Ra. Snarf decides to stay with Lion-O and the other Thundercubs prepare the Feliner to leave New Thundera but Mumm-Ra arrives and attacks the Thundercubs.

Lion-O frees the Thundercubs from Mumm-Ra's spell and the Thundercubs safely leave New Thundera. Lion-O and Snarf must confront Mumm-Ra and get the Book of Omens. After they defeat Mumm-Ra, they ask Mu-Mutt (using a magical flute) to use Mumm-Ra's "device" to get them back to Third Earth. Meanwhile the Lunataks capture some Berbils and the Thundercubs return to Third Earth and they and the Thunderkittens must go to Sky Tomb to free the other Thundercats and the Berbils. After everyone is freed, they are all cornered by the Lunataks, but Lion-O and Snarf arrive to save the day. The Thundercubs must then go in the Cave of Time to become Thundercats again and Mumm-Ra is abandoned on New Thundera and the Ancient Spirits bring him back to Third Earth.
